4th - 6th November
Business leaders converge on Birmingham
This November will see the Midlands playing host to major political leaders, including both the British and Romanian Prime Ministers, as well as a cast list of the biggest names in business when the CBI will celebrate its 25th National Conference in Birmingham. The Conference programme, the most important in the UK business calendar, will encourage delegates to debate the future for British industry, while providing the opportunity for delegates to network with their peers at a series of informal breakfasts, lunches and dinners.
In addition to featuring the traditional keynote address on the economy by the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, the Conference sessions will once again provide an array of high-level speakers from the worlds of both politics and business. The sessions will focus on four of the most important issues on the business agenda: technology, education, globalisation, and planning. These debates will include presentations and challenges from three Secretaries of State as well as the Hewlett-Packard Company ‘inventor’, Richard DeMillo; Terry Leahy of Tesco plc and Lord Browne of Madingley, CEO of BP plc. In the popular "On the Spot" debate, delegates will have the chance to fire questions at, and get answers
from, the Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Trade & Industry, and her Conservative and Liberal Democrat shadows. Digby Jones, Director-General of the CBI said: "The event promises to be rewarding, challenging and informative with something to suit all tastes. We have ensured that there will be strong focus on local markets and on global markets - on regional development and on international developments. From planning to training, from economic policy to globalisation, all factors in today's business world will be addressed. We aim to give members of the business community a unique platform to have their say about how to shape the business environment. There will be plenty of opportunities for a free and frank exchange of views between delegates and policy makers." Following the schedule of debates on the first day of Conference are a selection of invaluable breakout sessions organised by Hewlett-Packard, the Equality Commissions and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Delegates can attend the session that is most relevant to them. The Business Exhibition runs in tandem with the Conference and is where many of Britain’s top companies can be found. Exhibitors and delegates make use of the meeting point, Café Invent, to build prospect databases, take time out from the Conference, log on to the Internet and most importantly to interact with colleagues and clients. The CBI’s 25th National Conference takes place from Sunday 4 November to Tuesday 6 November 2001 at the ICC in Birmingham.
