HEAVYWEIGHT ROLE FOR WOLVERHAMPTON
After three years in Birmingham, the most talked about event on the world martial arts calendar is on its way to Wolverhampton. Combining the skills of kickboxing, karate, taekwondo and kung-fu in one all-action discipline, the explosive 8-man heavyweight tournament will be staged on Sunday February 22nd at the Civic Hall. Over 3x3 minute rounds, the K-1 fighters brace themselves for the possibility of no fewer than three contests as they attempt to battle through Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and Grand Final – all on the same night! Promoter Paul Hennessy said: “The event has been well received in Birmingham, but there is arguably a bigger and more enthusiastic martial arts scene in Wolverhampton, with several excellent gyms and a great pedigree of champions such as Peter Crooke and Kirkwood Walker. Now is the chance for the public here to show if that’s true and make Wolverhampton the British home for K-1”. In addition to the 7-bout tournament, Hennessy has gone to great lengths to bring about the eagerly awaited rematch between local favourite Reece Crooke and Andy Howson from Leeds. Wombourne-based Crooke lost a hotly disputed points decision in 2003 to Howson and is eager to put the record straight. This prestige bout, over traditional MuayThai (Thai Boxing) rules tops a very healthy support bill for the K-1, and also includes John Wincott from Stafford. In the main event, defending champion Gary Turner is the man to beat, but he can expect no easy time of it from the likes of Simon Demetriou, Mark Russell and Gordon Minors, on a night when almost anything can and probably will happen. Apart from the prestige, the incentive for the UK K-1 champion is a place in the next qualifying round in Paris, en route to the K-1 World Grand Prix Final at the Tokyo Dome in December where a capacity 70,000 crowd will be waiting – a television audience in excess of 30 million – not to mention a cool $400,000 to the winner. In theory, the K-1 champion from Wolverhampton could even go on to meet one Mike Tyson - so far refused entry to Tokyo by the Japanese government, but determined to get onto the K-1 stage. Doors open at 5.30pm…..Show starts at 6.30pm Tickets are priced at:
