Millions of pounds worth of aircraft in action at Flying Legends air show

Some extremely valuable, and very rare, historic aircraft will be seen in action at the Imperial War Museum Duxford for the Flying Legends Air Show on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July.  The show, presented in conjunction with Duxford-based The Fighter Collection, will see plenty of excitement as some of the world’s top pilots come together with some very expensive and classy warbird aircraft to bring a touch of Hollywood-style glamour to Duxford.

Jane Larcombe of The Fighter Collection says “Without a doubt, some of the most valuable aircraft in the world, displayed by some of the finest and most experienced warbird pilots, will be at this air show.  Some of the aircraft flying are the only airworthy examples of their type.”

Flying Legends is a two-day spectacular of pure “wow” factor with plenty of nostalgia and excitement.  It has a well-deserved reputation for bringing together a mouth-watering line up of historic warbird aircraft – many of which are true combat veterans from the Second World War as well as film and TV stars, having appeared in films such as Saving Private Ryan, Memphis Belle, Pearl Harbor, Operation Crossbow and The Battle of Britain and TV dramas from Poirot to Foyles War.

Excitement is building for the show organisers as, with only a couple of weeks to go, final arrangements are in hand for a show line up which is second to none.  Tracey Woods, Marketing and PR Manager for Duxford says “Flying Legends is, quite simply, unique.  Although difficult to put a true value on an historic aircraft as most are irreplaceable, many genuine warbird fighter aircraft will be worth around £1 million – with nearly 70 aircraft scheduled to appear at this show, visitors will literally be seeing millions of pounds worth of history in the air.”

On both days, visitors to the show will have the opportunity to meet veteran pilots and crew, as well as browse a wide variety of trade stands.  They’ll also be able to study the display aircraft at close quarters on the Flight Line Walk (subject to a small additional charge) and, of course, settle down to watch some three hours of superb flying.  The crowds won’t be disappointed as aircraft scheduled to appear include a dozen Spitfires in a Spitfire Scramble, a Mustang Stampede featuring some seven P-51 Mustangs, several Hurricanes, a German ME109 – once the arch enemy of the Spitfire - and the mighty B-17 Flying Fortresses, Sally B and The Pink Lady.

Also scheduled to fly are The Fighter Collection’s impressive stable of aircraft including the Bearcat, Tigercat and Hellcat and the gutsy P-47 Thunderbolt.  The whole of the Museum will also be open for visitors to enjoy with plenty to see including The Battle of Britain and the evocative Forgotten War exhibitions, conservation work in progress and the stunning American Air Museum.

Gates open at 8.00 am and the flying begins at 2.00 pm.  Tickets – Adults £30, Senior Citizens/Concessions £25, Children £10.  Superb VIP-style Gold Pass tickets available in advance - for more information about tickets or the flying programme call 01223 835000 or visit www.iwm.org.uk.
