TATTOO TAKES OFF
Salute to Bomber Crews
Tattoo visitors, airshow organisers and participants observed a minute’s
silence on both days in honour of bomber aircrew who lost their lives in
two world wars and the conflicts that followed. Pride of place was taken
by Royal Air Force Bomber Command veterans representing 617 (Dambusters)
Squadron and other illustrious RAF squadrons, joined on Saturday by General
Robert Burns of the US Eighth Air Force. Eighty-five year-old General Burns,
who served in England during World War II, was flown from Florida to the
UK by British Airways to be at an event that also commemorated the 60th
anniversary of the ‘Mighty Eighth’.
In one of RIAT’s biggest-ever displays of 1940s aeroplanes, the Battle
of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster, together
with the world’s only airworthy Blenheim bomber, the famous Sally B B-17
Flying Fortress and P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt fighters, flew an
evocative tribute that brought tears to the eyes of many of the veterans.
Modern US Air Force F-16s and an RAF Tornado GR4 also performed in the
RIAT Salute to Bomber Crews.
Tattoo Highlights
Top Gun Tornado pilot Squadron Leader Colin McGregor, older brother
to actor Ewan McGregor, stole the limelight with a scorching 10 minute
solo display in the RAF’s front-line jet, flying with female navigator
Flight Lieutenant Andi McCall. An F-117A Stealth Nighthawk, Harrier ‘Jump
Jets’ and F-15s brought awesome air power to Fairford, but there were also
helicopter routines, light aircraft and elegant gliders in the flying display.
As billed, the flamboyant Frecce Tricolori performed to the voice of
the great Pavarotti and the RAF Red Arrows introduced several new sequences
to their celebrated display. Other aerobatic thrills were provided by La
Patrouille de France, Spain’s Patrulla Aguila, Patrouille Suisse, the Royal
Jordanian Falcons and Los Halcones from Chile. The South American’s Extra
300s arrived in crates aboard a B-707 and were reassembled to appear at
RIAT.
Many had predicted that, post 11 September, the US Air Force would have
little or no participation in RIAT. This fear proved unfounded with the
world’s largest air force also flying B-52 and B-1B bombers at the show
and lining up KC-135 tankers and vast transport aircraft including the
C-5 Galaxy - the world’s biggest - in the static park.
Tattoo Flying Display Trophies
The King Hussein Memorial Sword (Best Overall)
Lieutenants Francois Breton and Guillaume Coeffin of 3/33 Squadron,
French Air Force, flew two Mirage F1s to victory as the best pilots of
RIAT 2002.
The Lockheed Martin Cannestra Trophy (Best
Overseas Participant)
The elegant Royal Jordanian Falcons won this category, but Special
Mention goes to Heritage Flight P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt fighters.
The Steedman Display Sword (Best UK Participant)
The ‘As the Crow Flies’ Trophy (awarded by the Friends of RIAT)
A double win for Royal Navy pilots Lieutenant Commander Rob Schwab
and Lieutenant Will Hynett of 899 Squadron at RNAS Yelvilton flying two
Sea Harrier FA2s.
The Shell Oil UK ‘Sir Douglas Bader Trophy’
(Best Individual Flying Display)
Captain Rick Van Der Delden of 312 Squadron, Royal Netherlands Air
Force at Volkel Air Base coaxed the very best from his F-16 to win this
award.
The Solo Jet Aerobatic Trophy (Best Single
Jet Demonstration)
A win for the Royal Air Force and Flight Lieutenant Tony Cann of 20
Squadron, RAF Wittering, in a Harrier GR7 display that proved one of the
most popular of RIAT 2002.
