Worcester Porcelain will be a special attraction at the UK’s largest and most popular spring antiques fair, Antiques for Everyone, at the NEC, Birmingham from Thursday 19th – Sunday 22nd April 2001. Antiques for Everyone is the largest vetted and datelined antiques fair in the UK. More than 600 dealers exhibit a huge range of antiques, fine paintings, collector’s objets d’art, period interior pieces and decorative accessories. All exhibits are for sale and will have been passed for authenticity by members of the 150-strong Vetting Committee. Twenty-five thousand collectors and antiques enthusiasts from across the world are expected to attend. Worcester Porcelain will be the theme of the Fair and a special Loan Exhibition from Royal Worcester and the Museum of Worcester Porcelain will celebrate the firm’s 250th Anniversary. The Museum will be providing a display of superlative Worcester porcelain drawn from the past 250 years in addition to a selection of 2001 Commemorative Ware. Artists from Royal Worcester will be demonstrating hand-painting and mould-making techniques while Curator Wendy Cook will be presenting seminar talks on behalf of the Museum. The World’s Oldest Humpty Dumpty will be among the many rare and unusual exhibits on display and for sale at Antiques for Everyone. Humpty is in fact an extremely rare Stieff soft toy dating from around 1905. He belongs to dealer Erna Hiscock from Kent who describes Humpty as possibly unique with his charming painted face. He is priced at £900. A Nest of Dinosaur Eggs from the Gobi Desert,
estimated to be more than 70 million years old, will be the oldest collectable
on sale at the Fair. Belonging to dealer John Hiscock from Kent, the clutch
of eight eggs is described as a very special find. 'Single fossilised dinosaur
eggs have been seen around the antiques trade for a year or two, but a
complete nest of eggs is extremely rare,' says John. Dinosaur eggs are
classed as antiquities by collectors, a field which also includes Egyptian
and Greek pottery, Roman glass, early Chinese pottery and bronzes, which
will all feature on the stands of several specialists. (An illustrated
article of 700 words on Antiquities is available free of charge).
Exhibitors at Antiques for Everyone are divided into two areas -Section One where exhibits pre-date 1914 and are mainly presented in room-set style displays, and Section Two, where exhibits pre-date 1940 with the exception of jewellery and tribal carpets which are allowed to 1960. Prices range from less than £10 for items such as 1920s costume jewellery and Edwardian lace and linen, to more than £100,000 for the finest Continental oil paintings. All exhibits will have been checked for quality and authenticity by members of the fair’s Vetting Committee to ensure, as far as possible, that collectors can make their purchases with confidence. More than 200 exhibitors belong to one of the UK’s major trade associations, LAPADA or BADA. The Theatre Seminars
