![]() Britain’s largest free arts festival running in Birmingham for the fifth year…. Birmingham’s ArtsFest will enter its fifth year on the weekend of Saturday 7th – Sunday 8th September 2002. It is anticipated that around 120,000 people will attend a whole host of arts and entertainment as part of Britain’s biggest free arts festival. During the ArtsFest weekend, the City Centre will see over 400 performances and workshops from over 250 arts organisations, involving more than 2000 artists. Programming for ArtsFest 2002 is currently under way – last year’s highlights included performances by City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The Dhol Blasters, Birmingham Royal Ballet and a live DJ set by House of God. For ArtsFest 2002 it is confirmed that the internationally acclaimed Theater Titanick will perform their spectacular live production of Firebirds in Centenary Square on Saturday night. The festival includes visual arts events involving local museums and galleries – last year the Ikon Gallery gallery displayed artwork by Julian Opie at the City Centre Habitat store. ArtsFest also gives adults and children alike the opportunity to participate through ‘Do It!’ a series of workshops ranging from tai-chi to DJ skills; ‘Taste It!’ provides samples of different cuisines from Birmingham’s leading restaurants; and ‘Clubbin’ It!’ features arts events taking place in City nightclubs. And it doesn’t just stop there … for two weeks prior to the ArtsFest weekend, there will be trailblazers taking place in unusual spaces cross the city … ArtsFest is focused around Birmingham’s City Centre with satellite venues at mac in the City’s Cannon Hill Park providing additional events and Castle Vale artsite. ArtsFest originally drew its inspiration from Amsterdam’s Uitmarkt, which was established over 20 years ago to showcase the forthcoming Autumn season for arts organisations in the City. ArtsFest is a co-promotion between Birmingham City Council and Birmingham Arts Marketing. For more information on ArtsFest, visit www.artsfest.org.uk
