Astonishing Splashes of Colour
Clare Morrall

Fiction • ISBN: 0 9541303 2 4 • £7.99 • UK distribution by Turnaround

LONGLISTED FOR THE 2003 MAN BOOKER PRIZE FOR FICTION

‘Heartbreaking and accomplished’ The Bookseller

‘When is the right time to tell someone they’re not who they think they are?’
Caught in an over-vivid world, Kitty is tipped off-centre by the loss of her ‘child that never was’. And as children all around become emblems of hope and longing and grief, she’s made shockingly aware of the real reason for her pervasive sense of ‘non-existence’ . . .

What mystery at the heart of Kitty’s odd family makes her four brothers so vague about her mother’s life? And why does Dad splash paint on canvas rather than answer his daughter’s questions? In her dreams Kitty glimpses a hippie’s kaleidoscope van – is it a link to her missing sister and her indistinct childhood?

This compelling and witty debut will resonate with many readers. It tells of identity struggles in a large family, the sadness of lost children, the approach of breakdown and desperation – and the optimism of an eccentric, loving marriage (‘If it wasn’t for me, he would be a wonderful husband’).

‘Fresh, frightening and raw. There’s nothing the least depressing about this nevertheless sad story, certainly nothing remotely sentimental’ Margaret Forster

‘An extremely good first novel: deceptively simple, subtly observed, with a plot that drags you forward like a strong current’     Daily Mail

‘An intense portrait of a woman who cannot remember her own mother and will never be a mother herself … a real page-turner’      Big Issue

‘An affinity with the vulnerability of children and an eye for the comic rescue Kitty’s story from too much darkness’      Guardian

About the Author

Astonishing Splashes of Colour is Clare Morrall’s first novel. A music teacher with two adult children, she lives and works in Birmingham. Astonishing Splashes of Colour reflects her interest in the dynamics of motherless family life and in synaesthesia – a condition in which emotions can be seen as colours.

Read our review

A poignant, emotive story about lost children, misunderstandings and family life. The narrative carries us along as we join with Kitty in her quest for the truth. From the beginning, we want to learn more about Kitty and her mysterious past, a past which haunts and shapes her future. "Astonishing Splashes of Colour" is a well-written and thought provoking novel, not the sort of book you read to lift your spirits but well worth reading and very deserving of it's inclusion in the Man Booker list.
