BABY FEVER GRIPS BIRMINGHAM
Flaunt it, don’t hide it - there’s no more fashionable shape to have than a bump. Celebrity mums and mums-to-be (and there are dozens of them) are leading the way when it comes to the current baby boom. Look at pregnant Catherine Zeta Jones, Jade Goody, Jamie Oliver’s wife Jules and TV presenter Donna Air who are currently proudly show off their bumps, while you seldom see headline-making mothers like Victoria Beckham, Liz Hurley, Davina McCall, Claudia Schiffer, or Kate Moss without the must-have accessory of the moment - a baby sling or push chair. Now baby fever is gripping the Midlands with an average of 107,000 women giving birth each year. According to Birmingham Health Authority figures, women in the Midlands are amongst the most fertile in the country – ranking only behind London and Bradford (65.31 per thousand compared to 81.89 per thousand in London). There are two ways of facing up to pregnancy and motherhood. ‘Ostriches’ are those who carry on as normal and pretend it’s not happening until the last very moment. ‘Squirrels’, on the other hand, begin decorating the nursery and buying baby grows the minute the little blue line on the pregnancy testing kit appears. But both groups have a strong common link – an insatiable thirst for information, news and advice and the best place to get this is The Baby Show which is run in association with Practical Parenting magazine at Birmingham’s NEC from May 30 – June 1. What to wear, what to buy, how to cope with sleepless night and Terrible Twos, the Show is the place to find out everything to do with pregnancy, babies and toddlers. With loads of fantastic features from fashion shows to a buggy testing zone, it’s a fantastic girlie day out, not just for mums to be and new mothers but for their partners and girlfriends too! From girl talk to baby talk. Has the goss about men, sex and shopping been hi-jacked by concerns about breast-feeding and three-month colic? Are ‘Learner Mums’ seeing their sassy-status get swallowed up by parenthood and feeling that they’ve been ostracised by the single-girl sisterhood? For those experiencing the same traumatic life changes as Sex and the City’s Miranda Hobbs, there’s only one place to turn to for help – The Baby Show. With fantastic features from fashion shows to pampering parlours, it’s a great girlie day out not just for the mum-to-be, but for mums and for mum’s mates too. The Baby Show is a one-stop shop offering everything you need to get ready for the little one: from nursery design ideas and fashion tips for baby and mum, to pushchair assault courses – the ultimate way to test if a pram can stand the heat on the high-street For mums whose friends are footloose and baby-free, the Baby Show is a great opportunity to gain advice and share experiences with other mums. Here they will find all the answers to happy and successful parenthood with expert-run workshops on everything from how to boost energy during pregnancy to dealing with toddler tantrums.
