Welcome to The Crescent Theatre, one of Birmingham's oldest theatre groups with a reputation for providing high quality entertainment at affordable prices.

About the Crescent

The Crescent is located in a new theatre which is part of the prestigious Brindleyplace development in the heart of Birmingham. There is a membership in excess of 250 actors, technicians, set designers, etc. and stage upwards of fifteen productions a year. The thriving theatre has a 300+ seat main house, 100 seat studio theatre, rehearsal rooms and spacious bar.

This is the Crescent's third home in the City of Birmingham.

The Crescent is a founder member of The Little Theatre Guild of Great Britain

The Crescent Youth Theatre

The Crescent Youth Theatre was founded in 1982 and over the past twenty years has established an excellent reputation for high-quality youth drama provision.  The Youth Theatre draws young people aged between 12 and 18 from schools all over Birmingham for Saturday morning workshops during term time. In addition to a resident workshop leader, currently Seeyam Brijmohun, members have enjoyed sessions with specialists in such skills as stage fighting, circus and stand-up comedy.

Everyone has an opportunity to perform in the annual main stage production which is part of the Crescent Theatre’s main season and to benefit from the resources of one of the best small theatres in the region. Past productions have included Animal Farm, Romeo and Juliet, Great Expectations, Hiawatha  and Teechers.

In 2000 the Youth Theatre worked with performance artist Carran Waterfield on Millennophobia, a specially commissioned contribution to Birmingham’s Forward Festival. Members have written and directed their own plays and performed in small-scale studio productions including David Harrower’s The Chrysalids.  In collaboration with other Birmingham-based youth drama groups, the Crescent Youth Theatre has taken part in workshop festivals and toured joint presentations of devised performance.

Past members have joined the National Youth Theatre, gained a place at drama school or  gone on to study drama at University. Several are now drama teachers themselves. Rina Mahoney, last seen in Behsharam staged in the Door at Birmingham Rep received her early training with the Crescent Theatre. Another former member,Laura Collier, is currently Education Officer with Out of Joint Theatre Company.  There is no audition to join the Youth Theatre and new members are welcome to apply.

Forthcoming production
“Zigger Zagger” by Peter Terson 11-16 March in the Crescent Main Theatre at 7.30.  Box Offfice 0121 643 5858
This play was written for the National Youth Theatre in 1967 and took audiences and critics by storm. It tells the story of a young lad leaving school with no qualifications, no skills, no prospects, no hope but one love - football. The play is tragic as we see his home life breaking up , yet comic as he tries to deal with meddling and out of touch authority figures. The backdrop to this is the ever present, ever exuberant football crowd-cheering, chanting, swearing and shouting. A high energy production which the Crescent Theatre will be proud to host.

Crescent Membership
The Crescent Theatre is run almost entirely by volunteers in their spare time.
Members come from all walks of life with a love of live theatre as their common interest.
If you are looking for the opportunity to meet like-minded people and take part in a satisfying, creative activity why not come and join us.
You do not have to be an aspiring actor to take part in productions - usually there are more people involved off stage than on it.

The Crescent Theatre offers something special to all visitors. Whether you are attending a performance, organising a corporate event, performing at the venue or hiring costumes our staff and members will do all they can to meet your particular needs and make you feel at home.
