O2 CHALLENGE Faisel Muhammad, a graduate from the University of Aston, 23 years of age and a volunteer with the British Lung Foundation Midlands region has set his sights on raising £2000 to go across the High Atlas mountains of Morocco as part of the foundation’s “O2 challenge”.
The trip, which starts on April the 27th and lasts for 10 days, involves a 254-Km ride over some of the most rugged terrain in the world taking in peaks of 8500 feet. Altitude will not be a problem for Faisel as he has been training hard since December and is fortunate enough to have healthy lungs, unlike so many of the people he comes into contact with during his voluntary work. If you look carefully at the BLF logo you will notice the sign for Oxygen O2, vital for life. The BLF will officially launch the O2 challenge this year on the date O2-O2-O2, a good omen if there ever was a need! Faisel through his volunteer work with the BLF has great motivation for the fund raising trip because he has seen at first hand the suffering of people from all walks of life that are effected by lung disease. Every day is a fight for breath for those afflicted by lung disease. A recent British Thoracic Society report illustrated the impact of lung disease on the UK with a mortality rate greater then any other health problem in Britain (170,000 lung related deaths per year). This leaves the UK on par with former soviet states such as Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. He is also aware that the Red Balloon Appeal
which is to raise £1.5 million for a centre of excellence for lung
research is taking place in our own city of Birmingham
at the University Medical School.
As someone who is proud of his city, he is doubly determined to raise the
£2000.
