FREESTUFF & MONEYSAVERS Everyone loves a freebie and now thanks to the Internet, there are thousands of freebies just waiting to be downloaded. So whether you want software, graphics, fonts, music, useful free services or even everyday items like food or business cards, you can now get them online for nothing. The one problem is of course in knowing where to find them and that's where this section from Birmingham 101 comes in. We've searched the web to provide you with a comprehensive list of sites offering the very best freebies. The list we've compiled comes complete with web addresses and descriptions to help you find exactly what you want. What we plan is to regularly bring you more items, ideas and information on the freestuff and money saving sites on offer, hopefully on at least a weekly basis so keep checking back here. So what sort of things are we talking about? Well, most people are aware that you can download computer programs and software for all sorts of tasks and in the coming weeks, we will detail some of the best but for now, one of our favourites is Napster. You may have heard of this as it is in the news at the moment because of a huge lawsuit in America. Basically, it is a program that lets you download MP3s (the music files that everyone is talking about) totally FREE and very easily, everything from Glen Miller to Pink Floyd rather than the often rather obscure artists on many MP3 sites. Once you've downloaded and installed the program (very easily) all you need to do is type in a song or an artist or both and the program quickly searches and usually comes up with a vast choice from where you can download the song. It will then get the song for you and you can use your computer for other things while the process is going on. It even has its own MP3 player built in so you can listen straightaway to all those songs you always wanted but never got around to buying. We're planning an article on free MP3s, audio and software for the near future but do try Napster for now. By the way, if you like this feature or the site in general, DON'T FORGET TO BOOKMARK IT NOW!! Another "freebie" we really like is a scheme where we get paid to surf the Internet. It's through a site called alladvantage.com and basically all it involves is downloading a piece of software (which only takes a few minutes), registering on their site and installing the program on your computer (all quite straightforward with clear instructions to follow). What then happens is when you are surfing the Internet you can activate this and a small extra bar appears at the bottom of your computer screen that basically flashes up adverts. You can switch it off at any time, but while it is on and you are actively surfing the Internet, just for having this on your screen, they will pay you 25p an hour. This doesn't sound much I know, but it is literally "FREE MONEY". Best of all, if you can get someone else to sign up and they use your referall number (which there's no reason for them not to) then you are also paid .06 pence per hour when they are surfing. Work it out, that means if you refer 10 friends then for every hour you all use the Internet, you get paid .85 pence. Friends who they refer also earn you money at .03 pence an hour so if in turn they all refer 10 people then that is 100 people all earning you .03 pence for every hour they surf or £3 for every hour. Of course, this all depends on everyone using the "referrer ID"( ours is UDY755 )of the person who recommended them but there is nothing to gain by not doing so, so I imagine most people would do it. You won't get rich by doing this but it helps pay the bills by just doing something you do anyway ie. surfing the net. There are also many free services you can get. Why buy a newspaper when you can often get more up to date news on the Internet. Try our local news or our national and international news pages. Another free moneysaver is telephone directory enquiries. For the price of your local internet connection, you can use one of several directory enquiry services and save the usual BT charge of 40p. Not a service you perhaps use every day but maybe something you would use more often if it was free. Another excellent and useful service is the RAC Routeplanner. With this you can enter your journey start and finish points, right down to postcode level if you have them, put in any places you may want to go via and the routeplanner will work out your best route giving directions, distances, times etc and details of any known road works etc along the way. This now covers the whole of Europe and we recently used it to good effect on a drive down to Southern Spain. They will even e-mail it to you which is particularly useful if your trip is in a few weeks time as they will send it to you on the date you specify, for example the day before your trip, with the latest roadworks, information etc updated. It's completely up to you which freebies you claim and which you
discard. But remember the old saying "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth".
Take advantage of as many of them as you possibly can. Let us know how
