New–look Glee Club wins its audience over …. and turns on to music

Following its £1M expansion, Birmingham’s new-look Glee Club has received rave reviews from audiences who travel to the leading comedy venue from all over the Midlands.

At its new plush entrance and lounge bar in the heart of the Arcadian Centre, the Glee has won praise for its high quality and imaginative interior, but has also gained compliments from all quarters for the fact that it has retained its unique good-time atmosphere.  During a recent performance at the greatly enhanced venue, Will Smith, whose ‘posh bloke’ character has become one of the most popular acts on the comedy circuit, said:  “It’s hard to believe that this club could get any better, but in my opinion, it just has.”

Now benefiting from an enlarged 480 capacity air-conditioned main auditorium, the Glee has new bars, more legroom, better tables, and, especially for the ladies !, lots more loos !  In addition, the Glee has confirmed its status as one of the country’s very best venues by opening a cosy new 150-seater studio theatre, which in addition to staging new late night shows on Saturdays, hosts live music for the first time in the club’s eventful seven-year history.  The Glee’s first offering is a special spoken word and music gig featuring former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock, and Kevin Rowland of Dexy’s Midnight Runners fame, on Tuesday 23 April.

Glee owner Mark Tughan says that the club now offers a wide variety of options to suit all tastes:  “Our investment isn’t just about all the mod cons and expansion we’ve invested in,” he enthused.  “With our new lounge bar open at 6.30pm, it’s an excellent meeting place for a pre-show drink.  And for those who not be in the mood for our free post-show disco, it’s ideal for those who might prefer to chat and chill-out after the comedy, because this separate lounge bar is open all evening.”

Good news has also arrived for the Glee, with the announcement that one of America’s all time comedy greats, Emo Phillips is to appear at the Birmingham venue for the first time.  Set for Thursday May 2nd, fans can look forward to Phillips’ very original brand of delivering lines, which include such deadpan examples as ‘The other day a woman came up to me and said, "Didn't I see you on television?" I said, "I don't know. You can't see out the other way."

Also not to be missed is award-winning Rich Hall as Otis Lee Crenshaw, appearing on Thursday May 23rd, and later, in September (two dates tbc) a special show by pub landlord Al Murray.  Both these acts are recent winners of the prestigious Perrier Comedy Award.  Jeff Green, always a favourite in Birmingham, and Daniel Kitson have also agreed to hold their Edinburgh Festival Preview shows at the Glee.

“We’re thrilled with the very positive response we’ve received from our loyal following, and the enthusiasm from the many newcomers we’ve attracted,” added Tughan.  “It proves that there’s a big demand in Birmingham for good quality entertainment, and that the Glee is leading the way.”

Bookings can be made for the glee club on 0870 241 5093 during office hours,
