Witchdoctor's Divination Bones
An extremely rare collection of Zulu Witchdoctor's Divination Bones goes on sale at the UK's leading winter antiques event, The LAPADA Antiques & Fine Art Fair at the NEC, Birmingham, from 15th - 19th January 2003.
The divination bones comprise a group of animal bones from the early
20th century and will be exhibited for sale by Elms Lesters, dealers from
London who specialise in ancient tribal art, with a retail price of £1,200.
The bones were once used in a ritual Zulu dance when the tribe's Witchdoctor
and his followers worked themselves into a Shamanistic trance state of
hyper concentration. The bones were thrown on an impala skin and
the Zulu ancestors were expected to provide omens and visions to the Witchdoctor.
The scattering of the bones and
Elms Lesters will also be offering an extremely rare 19th century Naga
head-hunter's basket from Northern India, complete with three monkey skulls
to denote the number of heads the warrior had taken. 19th century. Nagaland,
was relatively small, and extremely inaccessible part of mountainous
northeast India The monkey skulls reveal that the original owner,
who would have belonged to one of the sixteen Naga tribes, was not a man
to be messed with! Head-hunters believed that a person's soul was in the
nape of their neck and to set the soul
A rocking chair used by Napoleon Bonaparte during his final years in exile on St Helena will also be a major exhibit of historical interest at Fair. The unusual leather covered and iron-framed rocking chair bears the Napoleonic stamp, NB, with a crown above, and belongs to the period furniture specialists Reindeer Antiques of London and Northamptonshire. It will be on sale for £9,500. The chair is believed to have been used by Napoleon during his stay at Longwood on St Helena, the tiny island in the South Atlantic Ocean where he was exiled in 1815 after his defeat at the battle of Waterloo. Napoleon spent much of his remaining years dictating to friends his version of the events that occurred during his lifetime. He died of cancer on May 5, 1821 and was buried on the island before his remains were transferred to Paris in 1840. There are many hundreds of exhibits at The LAPADA Fair priced in the £100 to £5000 price range. As Fair Director Fran Foster explains, the fair appeals to collectors at every level. ‘LAPADA members sell antiques across the board, from the most sublime to the most unusual, from six figure price tags to two figure price tags. And with the added confidence that comes from dealing with a LAPADA member, collectors have all the reassurance they need, whether they want to buy a silver spoon for £25 or a fine oil painting for £100,000.Many studies show that fine antiques have proved to be a long term investment often better than property'. Every exhibitor abides by the rigorous regulations that make membership of LAPADA, the UK antiques trade's largest association, and a prerequisite for this particular fair. All exhibits will be strictly vetted for quality and authenticity and, while most exhibits will be antique and traditional in design and period, fine quality post-war objects and contemporary paintings are permitted.
