L'Esprit Manouche Music Festival Moseley Park 9th and 10th July, 2005
Now in its 3rd year L'Esprit Manouche is a two day festival of over 20 hours of
live music paying homage to the legendary jazz musician Django Reinhardt and taking
place in 11 acres of private parkland in Moseley, Birmingham on the
9th and 10th
July, 2005.
Dave Alexander, Festival Director, commented on the
festivals growing international reputation – “Why are we being lauded as the
best in the world? Its simple - nowhere else in the world will you see this
amount of talent gathered together over one weekend. In its first year our event
set new standards of artistic excellence and enjoyment for this kind of
festival, not only here in Birmingham and the UK but also on a global basis -
and we intend to keep on just getting better. Amongst the many coups for this
year we have persuaded the legendary Rosenberg Trio to make their first ever
appearance in the UK – that’s why they are calling us the best!”
Kicking off at 12.30 pm on Saturday 9th July
with a proposed running order that will delight and engage the audience the line
up is as follows:
Saturday
12.30 pm - Trio Gitano – a talented, young up and coming band from Birmingham
comprised of three highly talented guitarists. A fresh take on the genre.
1.45 pm - Graham Clark Trio – renowned violinist Graham Clark has teamed up with
UK stalwart Andy Mackenzie to form this high energy violin led trio.
3.00 pm - Swing 2005 – From north of the border Swing 2005 are a well
established, hard driving quartet in the Hot Club style.
4.15 pm - Dominique Pierard & Benjamin Clement – An amazing duo offering
variations on the theme. Dominique’s passion for incorporating the Portuguese
Fardo style, (learnt from the awesome Fapy Lafertin), into the set shines
through in the music.
6.00 pm - Dotschy Reinhardt – A talented and beautiful gypsy Diva from Berlin
with a phenomenal ‘vamp’ voice. 1930’s songs sultrily swung into 2005. A real
treat for everyone.
7.15pm - Lollo Meier – A player of incredible taste and virtuosity. From the
very first vibrant note you hear him play you know you have the real feel of
Django reincarnated here.
8.30 pm - Les Doigts de l'Homme – This band has knocked everyone out – they are
amazing! With a tremendously fresh feel, enjoyment, enthusiasm and stunning
virtuosity shine through in an energy packed set.
9.45 pm - Moreno – Phenomenal player from Paris. The true gypsy’s gypsy
guitarist! At last years ‘L’Esprit Manouche’ Matcho Winterstein said that it is
most important to be living in Paris at the moment – because that is where
Moreno is!
Sunday
12.30 pm - Fret and Fiddle – Fret and Fiddle is fronted by another talented
woman. Comprising Salene on violin with Gong’s Andy Bole on guitar and Mike
Green on bass to provide the rhythm section this local trio should get things
moving.
1.45 pm - Le QuecumBar All Stars – Ensemble from the UK’s top dedicated Gypsy
Jazz venue. Based in London Le QuecumBar promotes gypsy swing throughout the
year and this sextet features their best players fronted by Dick Emery’s highly
capable daughter Eliza.
3.00 pm - Hepbir / Cosimini Trio – A new format for these veterans of the UK
scene. This promises to be a high energy set as Colin and Jon push one another
to the max!
4.15 pm - Joe Townsend Quartet – The incredible Joe Townsend, violinist
extraordinaire. One of the most internationally respected players in the UK,
backed by the Dave Kelbie powerhouse.
5.30 pm - John Etheridge – A solo set from this legendary UK figure. This man
can play anything and make it look so effortless! Not to be missed.
6.45 pm - Rosenberg Trio – The incredible, unbelievable Rosenberg Trio play
their first UK gig. This should be an awesome final set for the festival -
another coup for L’Esprit Manouche. We are expecting L’Esprit Manouche veteran,
violinist Tim Kliphuis to be flying in to guest with the Rosenbergs – you just
can’t keep him away!
8.00 pm - The Jam Session - hopefully everyone
The success of the event has indeed strongly contributed to the current
resurgence of this genre in the UK, with a lot of younger people being amazed
and converted to the awesome beat, rhythm and swing of Gypsy jazz. Previous
artist line ups have included the geniuses Sylvain Luc (2003 jazz Grammy award
winner), Angelo Debarre, Tchavalo Schmitt, Fapy Lafertin, Boulou Ferre, Gary
Potter as well as a host of Reinhardt’s including Django’s grandson the young
and highly talented David Reinhardt!
Undoubtedly, the highlight of a vintage season of festivals throughout the UK,
2005's event promises to maintain and even exceed the standard set over previous
years. This promises to be an unforgetable weekend!
