LUCAS
IN
BIRMINGHAM
by
GORDON BUNCE

Publication date: July 2003
Price: £11.99 PB
ISBN. 0 7509 3390 9

Lucas was one of Birmingham's largest employers and one of its most
important companies until its closure in 1989. At its peak it employed 28,000
people on a number of sites throughout the city.

Lucas was known as an excellent employer and took a 'cradle to the grave'
attitude to its personnel. Many people remember the company with affection :
several generations of families would sometimes have worked there over the years, husbands, wives, sons and daughters. This book focuses on the
employees who made Lucas a great company. Senior engineers, office staff,
laboratory technicians, the skilled people responsible for all the fire and security arrangements and the inspection departments, who made sure the products conformed to the standards set out by the draughtsmen and women who interpreted the customer's requirements, operators of the machines, conveyors, lathes, presses and the intricate assembling and machining plants - people whose skills have perhaps not always been appreciated. Finally, the works engineers - responsible for overseeing and maintaining the whole works in order for them to function reliably day and night.

Recording everyday life as well as special events, such as children's parties,
retirement presentations and award ceremonies, it is sure to evoke many
memories for anyone who worked or had connections with Lucas.

Gordon Bunce worked for Lucas for 35 years and collected company
memorabilia for most of that time, forming the only known collection of Lucas photographs.
