Miller & Carter Steakhouse Pub Grill

Boldmere Gate, Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham B73 6LH

We recently visited the Miller and Carter Steakhouse Pub Grill in Sutton Park (formerly La Reserve). The restaurant is ideally situated on the edge of a lake , with picture windows so that on summer evenings, you can look out across the water. The decor is modern and stylish but comfortable and this is obviously a popular venue.

We chose a table in the window and settled down to peruse the extensive menu.  Starters ranch from £3.50 for Chicken soup for the soul or melon to £5.95 for smoked salmon.  There are also a number of starters for sharing. I chose the salmon which was plentiful and excellent and Robert had chicken and chorizo skewers which apparently tasted as good as it looked. As you might expect at a Steakhouse, there is a large choice of meats and burgers etc., with a selection of steaks served with the restaurant's signature onion loaf, fries or jacket potatoes, an iceberg wedge and dressing of your choice. Prices start from £6.50 for a grilled vegetable sandwich to £15.50 for an 8oz fillet steak. There is also a range of lighter dishes and salads. It must be said however, that there is not a huge choice for vegetarians but what there is sounds very appetising - goats cheese and caramellised red onion tart (£8.50) or grilled vegetable sandwich (£6.50) and this is, after all, a steakhouse!  For "semi" vegetarians like myself, there is a wider choice, with an ample selection of fish dishes.

After much deliberation, Robert decided on the 12oz.sirloin steak with crumbled blue cheese dressing and brandy and peppercorn sauce which he thoroughly enjoyed.  I chose the sea bass with roasted red pepper and a browned caper butter which was absolutely delicious.  It was served with crushed herb potatoes which were unusual but very tasty. The portions are large so we were quite disappointed when we realised that we couldn't actually manage a dessert! We were even offered one to share between us and, even though they all sounded scrumptious and we were very tempted, we decided that it would just be too much.

There is an extensive wine list and wines can be purchased by the glass, carafe or bottle.

Everything was attractively presented and we were served throughout by a very efficient and friendly waitress. A mention must also go to Ian, the Duty Manager whose manner is a lesson in friendly efficiency.  Despite us arriving very late as we had already visited two wrong restaurants before we finally got to the correct one, we were made to feel very welcome and the whole evening ran smoothly - all in all, a very enjoyable experience.
