ASCAR GETS READY TO ROCK!

STAR-STUDDED DRIVER LINE UP FOR 500 HORSEPOWER 'MONSTERS OF THE ROCK'

The ASCAR field is getting ready to rumble this weekend, with the teams
heading for Rockingham near Northampton for  the opening races of the
season this Sunday, 5th May.  Currently over 20 cars are confirmed for the
'Days of Thunder' American-style racing series, headed by a unique 'battle
of the TV stars'.

Heading  the line-up is reigning British Touring Car Champion Jason Plato,
who also presents Channel 4's 'Driven' TV programme.  Fellow Channel 4 TV
presenter and McLaren F1 test driver Darren Turner is also a front-runner
for the weekend's racing, while Channel 5 and former BBC Top Gear man Tiff
Needell is also expected to make an appearance. Completing the line up of
'handy' TV stars is Darren Manning, presenter of Carlton Television's
'Pulling Power' show and test driver for the BAR Formula One  team.

Going head-to-head with the multi-talented foursome, reigning ASCAR
Champion John Mickel, former CART Champ Car racer Nicolas Minassian and GTO
sports car Champion Kelvin Burt, join former American Busch Cup racer
Stevie Hodgson to add to the line-up. Hodgson, a Yorkshireman, has spent
the last three years racing in the USA and has worked for NASCAR racing
legend Richard Petty.  Also joining the line-up is South African Toby
Scheckter, son of former Formula One World Champion Jody Scheckter.

The action at Rockingham starts on Saturday, with practice for the ASCAR
racers and the supporting events including racing Pick-Up Trucks and
Formula Renault single seaters, as well as the unique chance for passengers
to take a ride in the amazing ASCAR 2-seater.  Sunday features an
action-packed eight-race programme, with the first call of 'Gentlemen Start
Your Engines' preceding the opening race at 11am.

ASCAR is giving 'Power to the People' by giving unprecedented access, lower ticket prices and a unique 'Interactive Saturday', as well as a packed non-stop Sunday racing programme.  These, added to the unique spectacle of a field of American 'Days of Thunder'-style V8 racers reaching over 170mph on the 1.5 mile banked oval track at Rockingham near Corby in Northamptonshire, promise to make it a great summer for race fans.

Admission for race days on Sundays will cost £ 15 per person, with children under the age of sixteen admitted free.  The admission not only includes free access to grandstand seats, including the spectacular Rockingham Building, but also includes paddock access, including Rockingham's unique to Britain 'cold' pitlane access, where until just a few minutes before the race, fans can get a true taste of pitlane action from just behind the mechanics' 'step-over' wall.

"Interactive Saturday" is a unique initiative in British racing where spectators and guests can mix with the teams in a more relaxed atmosphere during practice and sample laps of the track in a real ASCAR racer.  Two, two-seater cars will run at intervals between the practice sessions and at the end of the day, allowing fans to simply buy a £ 50 ticket and join the queue for the ride of a lifetime alongside one of the leading ASCAR stars.

The Sunday raceday programme will be the same for each of Rockingham's ASCAR events and will start at 10.30am, to give a high-impact, five hours of concentrated racing action, including two ASCAR races, two Pickup races, Legends heats and finals.  From 3:30pm, when possible additional ASCAR passenger rides will be given.

"The ASCAR package is all about entertainment and accessibility" says Bob Berridge, Chief Executive of Oval Racing Management, the organiser of the ASCAR series. "I can't understand some events, where just as the grandstands fill up, they stop for an hour's lunch break!  Entertainment means action and we'll provide a great spectacle with a tight, exciting programme and the minimum of gaps."

The new ASCAR season begins on May 5 at Rockingham, near Corby, for the first of six meetings at Britain's first banked oval racing circuit. The series goes international in 2002 with three further events at Eurospeedway, near Dresden in Germany.
