DOUBLE WHAMMY FOR ZWART,
MANSELL SHINES!
Klaas Zwart closely followed by 18 year old
Scott Mansell
Klaas Zwart extended his Championship lead with back-to-back victories
in the EuroBOSS Championship double-header at Donington Park. In the first
race, round 5, he had to claw back the lead from eighteen year old Scott
Mansell who looked set to record a sensational victory in his Benetton
after taking advantage of an early spin by Zwart. The intervention of the
pace car, following a collision between Matthew Mortlock and Frank Lyons,
brought the field together and much to the disappointment of the partisan
crowd, the local lad was unable to hold off Zwart and Nick Dhalli in their
Ascari Judds. The gap between Mansell and Dhalli at the finish was less
than a cars length.
Mansell took his revenge in round 6, emphatically beating Dhalli to
take second place, in the process posting several sub 60 second laps and
embarking on a slick overtaking manoeuvre, proving to everyone that he
is a considerable talent. Mansell was not the only eighteen year old to
take podium honours, Edwin Jowsey driving a Lola Chevrolet, won the Masters
Class in the Zig Zag Superprix, capping an excellent debut in EuroBOSS.
Roger Kilty, in a Reynard/Cosworth V8, moved back into the lead of the
F3000 Class with two emphatic victories and the fastest lap in his class.
Gary Ward in the Jordan 1976 Judd
As predicted, the appearance of Gary Ward in the 'snakeskin' Jordan
and Robbie Stirling in the Indy Reynard proved to be popular feature of
the days racing. Stirling started at the back of the grid in the Zig Zag
Super Prix yet finished in fifth place. Ward took fourth place in both
races.
Scott Mansell:
It was fantastic to drive the Benetton. It is so much easier to drive
than an F3000 and gave me so much confidence even though I was scared stiff
on the start line until the light went green. Now its back to school tomorrow
with business studies for my first two lessons.
Klaas Zwart:
I'm very happy, it was a great days work by the team. We only had a
slight problem at the end of the second race as the gearbox developed a
hitch. We are all looking forward to our final race at Le Mans.
Edwin Jowsey:
I'm very pleased with the result. It's just a shame that the car is
very underpowered compared to the rest of the field. I could close on them
under braking but it was difficult to holdn them off on the straights.
It was great to be part of EuroBOSS and I would like to be part of this
exciting Championship in the future.
