Phil Is Back To Front In
NDS EuroBOSS Series Opener
CLICK
HERE FOR VIDEO OF THE MEETING
Donington Park, UK, Monday 6th May: In a fascinating race that, once
again
demonstrated the attraction of the EuroBOSS formula, Phil Andrews made
his way from the back of the grid past a field of seventeen cars to take
the chequered flag, in a 1997 Benetton Judd, 3.285 seconds ahead of Klaas
Zwart driving a 1995 Ferrari V12. Andrews started at the back of the grid
after failing to run in the afternoons qualifying session due to a fuel
pump problem but sliced his way past his competitors in a magnificent display
of racing.
The sight of a Ferrari on the front of the grid was greeted with delight
by the large Bank Holiday crowd as Zwart put in an impressive qualifying
session, but the joy was short lived as Toivonen beat the Ferrari to the
first corner. Zwart regained the lead on lap two and looked to be about
to dominate the race but Andrews in the Benetton had different ideas and
by half distance had moved into the lead, setting a fastest lap time of
58.863 seconds. He then led the fast and furious race, packed with overtaking
manoeuvres, to the end but the largest cheer from the crowd was reserved
for the former Ferrari of Jean Alesi.
In other classes NDS EuroBOSS 3000 driver Roger Kilty in his Lola Cosworth
V8 finished comfortably in ninth whilst the Eurobrun Judd driven by Anthony
Hansford finished top in the NDS EuroBOSS Masters, fifteenth overall, beating
Colin Stone in the RAM Hart by nearly 30 seconds.
Phil Andrews, Driver, Team Ascari:
Everyone worked so hard throughout the day so I was naturally very
disappointed that we werent able to qualify. I thought the best I could
hope for was 5th place and winning is fantastic for Team Ascari and a just
reward for all their hard work. It took 3 laps to get going but then the
car was spot on and when Klaas and Harri got held up half way through the
race I realised I had a chance. Im very pleased for everyone.
Klaas Zwart, Driver, Team Ascari:
I am very pleased, the car performed excellently. I experienced problems
at the
start with high water temperature and low oil temperature and the car
just stalled
even though I had had the clutch. I am really looking forward to the
next round at Brands Hatch.
Harri Toivonen, Driver, Team Ascari:
This was my ever race in a single seater Formula One car and I came
third. NDS EuroBOSS is a fantastic series and makes for very exciting racing.
I had an excellent start, Klaas was spinning and I got out in front a position
which I held for a couple of laps.
