Motorshow 2000

RENAULT CLIO V6 BRITISH DEBUT

UK customers who ordered the Clio RenaultSport V6 - the world's only mid-engined hatchback - two years ago at the 1998 International Motor Show in Birmingham, have got their hands on the cars for the first time. But it was only for a few minutes as they were shown the final production version of the vehicle. Delivery will not be until March. Between 250 and 300 customers viewed the 2-seater 230bhp 3 litre V6, at the Show in Birmingham, meeting technical staff and other experts involved in the car's genesis. Clio product manager Phil York said: "Since receiving almost 400 orders within weeks of the last Motor Show we have been running a customer communications programme to keep the buyers informed about the project and we have now invited all 500 customers here to see the final production version. "What's been unique about the process is the level of involvement of the customers in the development of the customers in the development of the car and the speed with which that has taken place, keeping very true to the concept. It took 18 months from green light to the first car entering production." Oxfordshire-based Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) worked with RenaultSport in the development and engineering of the car. Customers contributed a number of ideas, including a unique numbered plaque in the car's centre console, the security systems and full-throttle test drive days at Chobham, Surrey and the Motor Industry Research Association in Nuneaton in January. "At the end of the day it's a really exclusive supercar and we want customers to feel they are being treated exclusively," Mr York added.
