SHOW REPORT MONDAY 23RD OCTOBER

E-COMMERCE IS THE THEME OF TODAY

The fast-growing world of e- commerce is the theme of the day (Monday October 23) at the British International Motor Show in Birmingham, where a record number of dot.com companies are present this year, offering special deals for visitors. The main manufacturers have taken the opportunity to showcase their online services at this year's Show, with Ford launching their new online service, www.fordjourney.com today.

Vauxhall have enhanced their online sales service with the introduction of the special edition Corsa iQ nearly new cars available only through the Network Q website ( www.network-q.co.uk ). Sir Richard Branson, who's Virgin Cars ( www.virgincars.co.uk ) was launched earlier this year, has already urged traditional motor dealerships to embrace the internet as the future of the car industry. "One has to react and do better when faced with competition and car manufacturers must respond because that is the world that we are in. The future is the internet working with car showrooms," he said while on a visit to the Motor Show. Established internet car buying company Autobytel ( www.autobytel.co.uk ) is promoting its newly launched website at the Show. It has described its stand as a "Stress Clinic" to point out the benefits of buying and selling online. Showroom4cars.com, which has combined with Mazda to launch a dedicated website ( www.showroom4mazda.com ), has also been receiving orders for the new Ginetta S4c. The British-built specialist sports car is on display alongside the Showroom4cars.com stand, and is the first car available to buy solely on the web. Among the other exhibitors offering services to motorists online is S1FT, which announced its new up-to-the-day information website ( www.s1ft.co.uk ), and Exchange and Mart, which has just replaced its old site with the re-branded and larger Interactive Exchange and Mart ( www.ixM.co.uk )

Giving drivers a cosy feeling on frosty days

Every motorist dreads the thought of having to climb into a cold car on a freezing winter day but Webasto Thermosystems UK have a solution on display at their stand at the British International Motor Show,NEC Birmingham. By either pressing a key ring control fob which has a range of 600 metres or by using your mobile phone the heater can be switched on, as Robert Eames , Technical Service Manager at Webasto Thermosystems UK Ltd demonstrates.

A specially adapted receiver similar to a phone pager activates the £299 Webasto Telecomfort heating system, described as a "wonderful breakthrough in comfort and safety." It means drivers can return to a warm car with windows free of frost, making it safer to drive home, simply by making a mobile phone call. Roger Edwards, managing director of Webasto Thermosystems UK, said: "We all hate going back to a freezing cold car but now just making a phone call it can be an altogether more pleasant and safer experience," he added.

Jenson Button to visit Motor Show

Formula One star Jenson Button will be given a hero’s welcome when he arrives at the British International Motor Show in Birmingham on Saturday to sign autographs at the BMW stand. The 20-year-old, who ended his debut season in Formula 1 with disappointment after retiring from the Malaysian grand prix, became the fifth youngest British driver to line up on the grid, having beaten Bruno Junqueira into the BMW Williams team at the start of the campaign. Button, who scored his first World Championship point in Brazil, quickly following it up with a fifth place at his first British Grand Prix. Button's best result to date has been his fourth place at Hockenheim - a race in which he had to start from the back of the grid after stalling on the dummy grid. Button, who has signed a two-year deal with Benetton for next season, will be available to sign autographs for fans on the BMW stand at 11.15am and at 3.45pm.
