The Sportscar Show 2001
Birmingham NEC
28 – 29th April 2001

SPORTSCAR SHOW A SPORTING SUCCESS

The first Sportscar Show ever to be held at the Birmingham NEC was a resounding success with a combination of official unveilings, high profile exhibitors and impressive amounts of money being raised for charity during the course of the two-day show on 28th and 29th April 2001.

Following a successful press launch at the NEC on 26th April, MG unveiled their new range of road and competition vehicles to the rapturous applause of visitors.  It was a proud moment for members of MG Rover at  Longbridge who attended the show to witness yet another confirmation of the marques growth in stature.

TVR, in a last minute move, thrilled the organisers of the show by unveiling one revised vehicle, the TVR Chimaera and one completely new vehicle, the TVR Tamora, receiving constant admiration from visitors.

Popular TV presenter Gail Porter was a welcome guest and when not busy presenting on the Pulling Power stage, was kept occupied by autograph hunters as were her colleagues from Central Television, Michele Newman, Jo Maling and Joanna Rice.

Alongside the stationary exotica, there was something for everyone within the car club stands, memorabilia and autojumble as well as another last minute addition, traffic policeman Chris Allanson previewing a 0 – 60mph record breaking attempt in a Tiger Kit car powered by two Kawasaki 900cc engines.

The weekend ended on a high note when an announcement came from The Sporting Bears Motor Club, that their charitable donations passenger rides, given in a variety of 50 different sports cars, had raised over £21,000 for Debra, Ivy House, Kidney Kids and Open Doors. This is a new record in their fund raising which had previously been set at £18,500 during the 2000 Classic Car Show.

Show Organiser, Rene Bros of Centre Exhibitions commented, “I am delighted with the success of the show and pleased to announce that next year it will be even bigger with more star attractions and many manufacturers have already shown interest in the 2002 show”.  He continued, “ I would like to take this opportunity to thank MG, Sporting Bears and all of the exhibitors for their invaluable contribution”.

The Sportscar Show 2002 will once again be held at the Birmingham NEC, on 11th and 12th May.
