THE NIA NETS AN INTERNATIONAL MATCH WITH JAMAICA
The NIA, Birmingham
Thursday 30 June 2005

England’s netballers, ranked fourth in the world, face a sunny challenge this summer, in a three match test series against the Jamaican national side, with the final test at The NIA, Birmingham on Thursday 30 June 2005.  And with Jamaica placed only one place above England in the world rankings, the competition is likely to be hot!

The last two meetings between the two teams have gone to the wire, with Jamaica pipping the English to third place at both the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and, most recently, at the 2003 World Championships. As National Performance Director Nigel Holl is keen to point out, this test series will be fiercely contested:

“With the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne less than a year away, the Test series will give the two teams the chance to assess their progress since they last met in international competition, and assert their mental dominance in the run in to the championships.  The England team has recently completed a lengthy Southern Hemisphere tour, which has given the young squad plenty of high pressure match play, and we are looking to convert that experience into impressive performances against Jamaica during the summer.”

One England player will be playing with mixed emotions:  defender Janet Coulbourne, recalled to the England side after a two year absence for this series, actually represented Jamaica from 1997-99.  Also recalled to the England side for the series is shooter Abby Teare, born in Australia, who last represented England against Jamaica in the 2003 World Championships bronze medal play off, which Jamaica narrowly won.  The England team will be looking to reverse this result and establish their superiority before the Commonwealth Games in March.

The Test Series opens at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on 25 June, followed by the second test at the MEN Arena on 28 June and the final test, which could be the series decider, at The NIA Birmingham on 30 June 2005.

Tickets are available for The NIA showdown from The NIA Box Office on 0870 909 4144 / www.necgroup.co.uk/boxoffice. Tickets (subject to booking and transaction fees) are priced £16 for adults, £9 for children and £42 for a family ticket.
