MAN DIES AFTER CAR LEAVES ROAD 

A man died and four others were injured when the car they were travelling in overturned in a field near Telford, police have said. The victim, Mark Tansey, 30, was a rear seat passenger in a Renault Laguna travelling through Little Wenlock. Another rear seat passenger fractured a leg while two other passengers and the driver suffered minor injuries. 

MAN HELD OVER ATTEMPTED MURDER 

A man has been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of a man at a supermarket distribution centre in Worcester, police said. The victim is being treated for his injuries at a Birmingham hospital and is said to be in a critical condition. Police were called to reports of an assault at the J Sainsburys centre on Wainwright Road. 

MOTORIST IN COURT AFTER CRASH 

A motorist is appearing before Telford Magistrates' Court charged with three counts of causing death by dangerous driving following a road crash. The motorist is also accused of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol following the accident on the B5062 at Edgmond. Police say the defendant's vehicle allegedly collided with another car. 

RIDER DIES AT ONE-DAY EVENT 

A Worcestershire rider has died at the Spring Hill one-day event at Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire. Samantha Hudson, 33, from near Malvern, was killed when her horse, Nightlight VI, fell on the cross-country-phase of the section for novice horses. Ms Hudson was pronounced dead on the scene after the fallen horse landed on top of her. 

MAN ASSAULTED WITH BLUNT WEAPON 

Doctors had to insert a metal plate into the jaw of a Newcastle-under-Lyme man after it was broken during an assault in an alleyway. The 32-year-old victim's attacker struck him on the side of his face with a blunt weapon as he walked between Silverdale Road and St Paul's Road. He was treated at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. 

WOMAN ROBBED AT KNIFEPOINT 

A woman was robbed at knifepoint by two men as she withdrew cash outside a Stoke-on-Trent bank, police have said. The victim was forced to hand over her money and bank card during the ordeal in Christchurch Street, Fenton. Officers are looking for two white men who ran off towards Glebedale Road. One is about 17 and 5ft 6in with a pale complexion and short, brown hair. 

MAN TRIED TO SNATCH GIRL TWICE 

A man in Birmingham tried to abduct the same teenage girl on two occasions in August, police have said. The 14-year-old was approached by the same man who tried to entice her into his car in Halesowen. The girl was able to walk away from the man in Long Lane who made off in a small, light-blue saloon car. Police have warned parents to be on guard. 

GUNS SEIZED IN HOUSE RAID 

A total of 15 firearms have been discovered at a house in Birmingham, a West Midlands Police spokesman said. Officers recovered the firearms during a search of an address in Ladywood Close, Quarrybank. A 55-year-old man was spoken to by police at the address but no arrests were made. Ballistic experts are examining the firearms. 

ORGAN DONORS DOUBLED 

The number of West Midlands people willing to donate organs has nearly doubled in the past five years, according to new figures. The NHS Organ Donor Register has 740,000 volunteers, around 14% of the region's population, compared to 400,000 five years ago. In the past year 1.2 million people in the UK have added their names. 

ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED 

A fresh campaign to target speeding on a Shropshire road which has seen 23 collisions over the past three years is set to start. West Mercia Constabulary will patrol a 17-mile stretch of the B4368 Morville to Craven Arms road for the next month in a bid to cut the accident toll. Three people were killed on the road in two accidents near Hungerford recently.

STUDENT IN SUSPECTED OVERDOSE 

An A-grade GCSE student found dead at her Bromsgrove home after celebrating her results died from a suspected drug overdose, it has emerged. Police said 16-year-old Sally Leeder's death came as she struggled to come to terms with the death of her boyfriend in a road accident. An inquest into her death will be held at Worcestershire Coroners Court. 

PEOPLE SMUGGLING RING SMASHED 

Police have smashed a people smuggling ring which brought illegal immigrants into Britain disguised as singers and dancers heading for the West Midlands. Thirteen people were arrested in raids on six addresses, including Wolverhampton and West Bromwich. The scam saw Indians arriving in the UK as "entertainers" who disappeared once in the country. 

SHOPKEEPER STABBED IN FACE 

A Black Country shopkeeper has been stabbed in the face while trying to fend off two masked robbers armed with a gun and a knife, police said. The 41-year-old owner of Wednesfield off-licence and general stores stopped the attackers getting any money. The shopkeeper was taken to Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, where he received stitches for his wounds. 

MAN TRIES TO ABDUCT GIRL, 10 

A 10-year-old girl was nearly abducted in Solihull as she pushed her baby brother in a pram, police have said. The youngster was outside a garage with her nine-month-old sibling in Cooks Lane, Chelmsley Wood, when a man approached and tried to drag her away. West Midlands Police said the girl kicked out at her abductor, who fled to a nearby car as she raised the alarm. 

NURSE ATTACKED WITH METAL BAR 

Police are hunting two teenagers who attacked a nurse in Redditch with a metal bar as she stood outside an accident and emergency department. Police said she was assaulted by two white youths, aged between 15 and 17, who demanded to know where the Alexandra Hospital safe was located. When the nurse called for help she was assaulted with a metal bar. 

DRIVERS FACING NEW RED ROUTE 

Drivers heading into Birmingham are contending with the first red route to be created outside London. The double red lines, which make stopping an offence, have been painted on two miles of the A34 Stratford Road through Shirley, Solihull. Anyone caught pulling up along the road, which handles an estimated 30,000 drivers a day, faces a £30 fine. 

BAT COLONY GETS NEW HOME 

A colony of bats whose roost was ruined in the biggest earthquake to hit Britain in a decade are to move to a new home. Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council is to create a hibernaculum for several thousand of the creatures on a former mining site. The tremor which hit the area last year ruined the bats' crumbling residence. 

MAN CRITICAL AFTER ATTACK 

A man is critically ill in hospital after being attacked by a group armed with pick axe handles, knives and pool cues on a Stourbridge street. The 24-year-old victim sustained severe head injuries in the attack on Bridgnorth Road, Wollaston. Five people, including two women, have been charged with wounding and have appeared before Halesowen magistrates. 

BENTLEY RELEASE NEW MODEL 

Luxury car maker Bentley is set to release its latest model built at their refurbished factory in Crewe, Cheshire. The six litre, £110,00 Continental GT, said to be the fastest four-seater coupe ever made, will be seen on the roads from November. Chief executive Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen said: "The car is taking the world by storm, just as we planned." 

MOTORISTS STILL RISKING LIVES 

Motorists are continuing to risk their lives on a Shropshire road despite the deaths of three people and a new police safety campaign. West Mercia Constabulary says cars and lorries are still overtaking on notorious stretches of the B4368 between Broadstone and Craven Arms. That stretch has seen the deaths of two motorists and a passenger this summer.

BOY KILLED IN TRAIN COLLISION 
A 15-year-old boy was killed when he was in collision with an inter-city train near Stafford, British Transport Police have said.The youngster, who has not been named, suffered fatal injuries in the accident with a Virgin West Coast London to Liverpool service in Doxey. A police spokesman said they were now trying to trace the boy's relatives. 

MAN CRUSHED OUTSIDE FACTORY 

An investigation has been launched after a contractor was crushed to death outside a car factory in Derbyshire. The worker, from Blackburn, Lancs, died at the Toyota plant in Burnaston after suffering serious head injuries. It is not yet known how he died and inquiries have been launched into the incident by police and the Health and Safety Executive. 

WAREHOUSE HIT BY MOSQUITOS 

Sainsbury's has blamed this summer's heatwave for a plague of mosquitoes which left dozens of Warwickshire warehouse staff nursing insect bites. Four employees at Hams Hall distribution depot, near Coleshill, went to hospital after being bitten at the site and 30 others were affected. One warehouse worker said: "These insects are driving us mad." 

13-YEAR-OLD ARRESTED OVER FIRE 

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire which engulfed a barn in Warwickshire, destroying 50 tons of straw. Warwickshire Police confirmed that fire crews from Rugby and Brinklow had been called to tackle the blaze at Brandon Wood Farm, Brandon, near Coventry. The youth has been questioned and resleased on police bail. 

FAMILY'S CARAVAN STOLEN 

A family has been left distraught after their caravan was stolen from a Worcestershire lay-by when they left it by the roadside to fetch a new tyre. West Mercia Police said the £10,000 caravan was taken from Alvechurch. The cream-coloured vehicle, which belongs to a family from Prestatyn, west Wales, was loaded with mountain bikes and clothes. 

MURDER DETECTIVES LOOK FOR CAR 

Detectives probing the murder of a 32-year-old man in Birmingham are appealing for information about a vehicle seen near to the scene. Naveed Saleem, 32, from Hall Green, was found stabbed to death at the wheel of his Range Rover in Moseley on Tuesday. Police now want to find out about a blue saloon-type car parked on Wake Green Road around 1am that morning. 

BRUMMIE TONE IMPRESSES VISITORS 

The Brummie accent - often derided as ugly and monotonous - is in fact a lilting tone which impresses foreigners visiting Birmingham, it is claimed. Research by a Birmingham University PhD student found many aspects of Brummie speak are found in Shakespeare's works. But Steve Thorne said the city's brand of English has yet to find favour with Britons in other parts of the UK. 

MURDER TEAM APPEAL FOR DRIVER 

Detectives investigating the murder of a Stoke-on-Trent off-licence owner have widened their inquiry to Humberside in the search for two crucial witnesses. Staffordshire Police believe a man seen delivering to Frank Bayley's Hartshill Road shop may have come from Hull and could have crucial information. Officers also want to speak to users of the Nat West bank nearby on August 16. 

ARTILLERY ROUND MADE SAFE 

Army bomb disposal experts have made safe a live artillery round after it was unearthed by a resident near Bedworth, Warwickshire. Ordnance experts closed roads and evacuated Bow Lane, Withybrook, after the shell was found in a back garden. Sgt Andy Rawson said: "The device contained a live charge and it could have exploded." 

CONCERN GROWS FOR MISSING YOUTH 

Police are growing increasingly concerned for the welfare of an Evesham teenager who went missing while being treated in hospital. Paul Nosworthy, 19, disappeared from the Worcestershire Royal Hospital on August 20 and has not been seen since. A police spokesman said: "We are appealing to Paul to contact his family to let them know he is safe and well."

MAN IN COURT ON MURDER CHARGE 

A 64-year-old West Midlands man is due to appear in court charged with murdering a pregnant woman. Palwinder Singh Dhillon will appear before Stratford magistrates accused of killing Anita Gindha, 22, at her home in Manor Park, east London. Mrs Gindha - who was eight months pregnant - was found strangled on the sofa by her husband in February. 

COUNCIL SLAMS RAIL CUTBACKS 

Warwickshire County Council has accused the Strategic Rail Authority of undermining its efforts to encourage more people to use local rail services. Director of transport John Deegan said he was disappointed the SRA had cut £28m from a fund to install new facilities at four stations. Henley-in-Arden, Stratford, Leamington and Warwick stations were affected. 

MAN DIES IN LORRY COLLISION 

A lorry driver has died following a collision between two HGVs near Evesham, police have said. The male driver of a flatbed truck died after a collision with an articulated lorry on the A46. The other driver suffered minor injuries. Police closed the A46 for around five hours and diverted traffic through nearby Sedgeberrow. 

WATER COMPANY TO RAISE BILLS 

A Birmingham-based water company has defended plans to raise household bills by more than £40 per year. Severn Trent says a 20% increase, coming into effect in 2005, is needed to fund a major investment programme. Although Severn Trent's proposed increase is below the national average of 31%, customers paying £212 a year would have to pay an extra £42.40.

A Toyota spokesman expressed the company's deepest sympathies and said earth moving equipment was involved in the accident which led to the death. 

TOWN SECOND IN RECYCLING RATES 

Householders in Lichfield are the second best recyclers in England and Wales, Government figures show. The city's residents recycle 33% of their household waste, second only to Daventry which recycles 44%. However, some local authorities, including Walsall and Dudley, recycled less waste last year than they did in the previous 12 months. 

MOTION DATA CENTRE TO BE BUILT 

A pioneering £2m specialist motion analysis centre is to be built at University College Worcester, the Advantage West Midlands agency said. The motion analysis research and rehabilitation centre will carry out groundbreaking studies into how the body works during physical activity. The centre will be built on the site of a former drama studio in Henwick Grove. 

MURDER PROBE AFTER DEPOT DEATH 

Police in Worcs have launched a murder investigation following the death of a supermarket employee who was allegedly assaulted by a teenage colleague. The male worker died in hospital three days after he was attacked at a Sainsbury's depot in Worcester. Police said a boy under arrest who also works at the supermarket centre is expected to be charged with murder.
