£200m CITY SCHEME TO GO AHEAD Planners in Birmingham have approved proposals for a £200m mixed-use development which is expected to create up to 6,000 jobs. The project, on a site adjacent to Snow Hill station, will include office space and 200 residential units. Councillor Andrew Coulson said the scheme was "another vote of confidence in Birmingham". PEDESTRIAN DIES IN CAR CRASH A pedestrian has died when he was involved in a collision with a car in a Derbyshire village. The 45-year-old man was walking along Long Lane, west of Long Lane village, near Ashbourne, when he was in collision with a green Rover car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are informing relatives and are appealing for witnesses. MEN CUT FREE AFTER HOUSE CRASH Two men were cut free from a car which crashed into a house after ploughing through a garden wall in Warwickshire. A green goddess crew released the victims from the wreckage of the Vauxhall Nova in Nuneaton. They were taken to the George Eliot Hospital. Police believe the car left the road after colliding with a stationary car. The men escaped with minor injuries. PAIR IN COURT OVER ATTACK Two men are due in court in Dudley charged with conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm after an attack which left two students badly injured. The two 18-year-olds, from Smethwick, are due to appear before Dudley Magistrates' Court. One student lost part of a finger while another suffered an injury to his arm in the attack near Dudley College. WORK TO START ON CIVIC CENTRE Building work is to start on a new community centre in the district of Birmingham where two teenagers were murdered at a New Year party. The Aston Pride Centre project will see the Ronnie's Roller Rink in Witton Road given a new life. Local ward councillor Muhammad Afzal will help get the works under way at a special sod-cutting ceremony. 8m TANK TRAINING BASE OPENED An £8m virtual reality tank warfare training base has been opened at barracks in Telford. More than 600 soldiers will benefit from the precision gunnery facility at Venning Barracks, Donnington. Lieutenant Colonel John Maclean, commanding officer of the Yeomanry, said: "To have such an excellent facility is a huge asset." DEAD COMMANDER SPOKE TO SOCIETY The commander of the lost Space Shuttle Columbia, Rick Husband, once spoke to the Midland Spaceflight Society, telling of his pride in his work. The secretary of the MSS, Andy Salmon, revealed that the USAF colonel had also sent one of the group's members a signed photograph. Mr Husband and his crew of six were tragically killed attempting re-entry. PIG LAW MISINTERPRETED - MEP A West Midlands MEP has claimed the government misconstrued an EU directive advising farmers to give toys to pigs. Philip Bushill-Matthews said the directive stated pigs should be given natural materials, not balls as the government interpreted it to mean. He said: "It is yet another example of our urban-led government showing its ignorance of the real farming world." NEW BELT DRIVE ON ANNIVERSARY Warwickshire Police have marked the 20th anniversary of legislation making the use of seat-belts compulsory by urging motorists not to flout the law. The force said that of the 57 people who died on the county's roads last year, 21 were not wearing a seat-belt. PC Alan Rogers said: "Nothing in motor vehicle history has led to improved safety than the seat-belt law." CHINESE URGED TO JOIN POLICE West Midlands Police have joined in celebrations marking the Chinese New Year by urging members of Birmingham's Chinese community to join its ranks. The recruitment drive aims to increase the representation of Chinese officers within the force. PC Manjit Marva said the New Year was a great opportunity to generate interest from within the Chinese community.
4th. February 2003 MOTHER ADMITS MANSLAUGHTER A Birmingham mother accused of murdering her baby son has pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Mirlene Stewart, 32, of Washwood Heath, was charged in July last year after her son Jordan Reid was found in a rock pool in west Wales. The case was adjourned to a date to be fixed when Stewart will be sentenced. MINISTER TO HOLD CRIME TALKS Home Office Minister John Denham is visiting Birmingham to discuss tackling commercial crime with business leaders. Mr Denham is to meet members of the business community at the city's Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Businesses will be asked their views on issues such as calls for a reduction in insurance premiums for companies which improve security and crime prevention. DRUGS DETECTOR TARGETS CLUBS Police in Birmingham have drafted in a hi-tech drugs detection device to identify people trying to smuggle illegal substances into nightclubs. The Vapor Tracer can identify the tiniest trace of drugs from hand swabs. West Midlands Police has secured £19,000 from the Communities Against Drugs initiative to buy the equipment, which has undergone successful trials. CYCLIST KILLED AFTER FALL The icy weather has claimed the life of a cyclist after he slipped and crashed while riding near Stoke-on-Trent. The male rider, in his 40s, was found by a passer-by on the pavement in Cheadle Road, Forsbrook, say police. He was treated at the scene of the accident by paramedics, but was pronounced dead at the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary, Stoke. MAN FINED OVER WAR PROTEST Prime Minister Tony Blair is planning a "genocidal war" against Iraq, a Warwickshire man has told a court. Nicholas Best, 27, of Leamington Spa, admitted obstructing the highway, but said Government policy had left him with no choice but to protest. Best was among 60 people arrested at a military HQ in London. He was fined £25 with £10 costs by Watford magistrates. CHILDREN ABDUCTED BY PARENTS A major police operation is under way after four children were abducted from social services care during a meeting with their parents in Wem, Shropshire. The children, aged from three to 12, were taken during an arranged "contact meeting" with parents Sharon Richards and Steven Hayward, of Shrewsbury. The family, who left in a small white car, may have fled to Ireland. POLICE PLEA TO 'RUNAWAY' GIRL Police have appealed for a missing teenager, who might have run away with her boyfriend, to contact them. Deborah Mochan, 14, of Wallbrook St, Coseley, West Midlands, was last seen five days ago at her grandmother's home in Pensnett, near Dudley. She is white, 5ft tall, of stocky build, and has straight black shoulder length hair. FAMILY WALKS OUT OF INQUEST The family of a man found dead six months after his uncle died have walked out of an inquest in Ketley, Telford, after a jury was sworn in. As soon as the jury of seven men and four women were sworn in, the family of Jason McGowan walked out. Telford and Wrekin coroner Michael Gwynne was told the family would only take part when legally required. NEW WINDFALL FOR CITY NURSERIES New nursery places have been created for 1,400 Birmingham youngsters -thanks to a £10m Government windfall. The city council is spending the money on neighbourhood nurseries in deprived areas such as Aston, Handsworth, Nechells and Washwood Heath. Money for the expanded service has come from the New Opportunities Fund and the Department for Education. FIRE CHIEFS THANK PUBLIC Fire chiefs in Staffordshire have praised the public for their vigilance during the latest two-day walkout by Fire Brigades Union members. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford said military crews had dealt with 34 emergency calls during the latest industrial action. "We thank people for keeping emergency calls to a minimum," he said. CITY MODEL FOR CRIME-FIGHTING Birmingham has become a national model for fighting retail crime, according to Home Office minister John Denham. Mr Denham said Birmingham's partnership schemes aimed at reducing business crime were the way forward. The minister made his comments as he addressed over 100 representatives from the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry. FIRM TO CLOSE BISCUIT FACTORY United Biscuits, which makes Penguins and Jaffa Cakes, expects to cut up to 900 jobs at a Leicestershire plant in a restructuring of its biscuits division. The group plans to close production at its factory in Ashby de la Zouch at the end of 2004. But 500 jobs at its other UK sites may be created, resulting in a net reduction of about 400 jobs nationwide. GUARD THREATENED WITH GUN Three armed robbers have threatened a security guard with a handgun in Birmingham before making off with cash. Police say the robbery took place in Quinton when a security van was making a cash delivery to a post office. The men, brandishing the gun, threatened the guard before stealing a cash box and making off in a stolen car, later found abandoned. NEW LEADS ON ABDUCTION CASE Police are following up a number of new leads in their hunt for four Shropshire children who were abducted from social services care by their parents. Tara Richards, 12, Tadhg, eight, Charlie, four, and Sid, three, were snatched by Sharon Richards and Steven Hayward in an arranged meeting in Wem. Police believe the family, from Shrewsbury, may have fled to Ireland. MP WELCOMES CHAMBER REJECTION A West Midlands Euro MP has welcomed the decision by Westminster MPs to reject Tony Blair's plans for an appointed second chamber. Liz Lynne, Lib Dem MEP for the region, said she wanted to see an entirely elected second chamber for Parliament. Her comments come as MPs, in a free vote, rejected all seven options for Lords reform put before them. MANUFACTURING DECLINE FORECAST A CBI survey of industrial trends in the region has found many businesses in the West Midlands expect to see a large decline in manufacturing this year. CBI West Midlands assistant director Gil Murray said some companies still anticipate a rise in orders however. Mr Murray believes 2003 will be "bleak" and urged the Bank of England to make a "realistic" decision on interest rates. TRUST COMMENDED IN REPORT A West Midlands NHS trust has been praised by the Commission for Health Improvement for its high standards. The University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs the Selly Oak and Queen Elizabeth hospitals, earned accolades for its "committed" staff. Chief executive Mark Britnell said he was delighted the CHI had recognised the hard work of hospital workers. MINISTER MEETS GIRLS' FAMILIES Home Office Minister John Denham vowed to crack down on gun crime after meeting the families of two teenage girls who were murdered in Birmingham. Mr Denham met relatives of Letisha Shakespeare and Charlene Ellis at West Midlands Police headquarters. He said measures to tackle gun crime included a mandatory five-year sentence for illegal possession of weapons. GUN FIRED IN MOSQUE, COURT TOLD A Birmingham worshipper fired a gun over the heads of a gang who attacked him during a weekly prayer meeting at a packed Surrey mosque, a court heard. Amir Khan, 27, pulled out the gun as he was attacked in the Crawley mosque hall, Chichester Crown Court was told. Khan, of Ladypool Road, denies having a firearm with intent to endanger life and with intent to cause fear. CYCLIST IN HOSPITAL AFTER FALL A 92-year-old cyclist is in a stable condition in hospital after being
found lying in an Evesham road. The pensioner was found by motorists on
the A44 near Lower Moor, Evesham. It was not clear how he suffered the
fall. The elderly man is now in a stable condition in Worcestershire Royal
Hospital, Worcester. Police are appealing for witnesses.
