TWO GIRLS SHOT DEAD AT PARTY Two teenage girls, aged 17 and 18, have died in a hail of bullets during a New Year's day party after a dispute at a hairdressing salon in Birmingham. Two other girls, aged 17 and 18, were also shot after a "considerable" number of bullets were fired. Police have launched a murder inquiry and are conducting a forensic search of a bullet-ridden car found nearby. The chief constable of West Midlands Police described the murder as a tragedy and stressed that the inquiry is at an early stage. "We have had an incident which in my short time in the West Midlands is unprecedented," said Mr Paul Scott-Lee. "Our sympathies go to the families who are going to have to live through the most devastating time," he added. The girls had been attending a private party along with 25 to 30 other young people, police have said. There had been "some sort of dispute" which resulted in people going to the premises with guns, said Chief Superintendent Dave Shaw. Two other girls who were shot received non-life-threatening injuries. MURDER PROBE CONTINUES An investigation is continuing into the murder of a Birmingham man stabbed to death as he celebrated New Year. Police believe the reveller, in his 30s, was killed during a street fight in Vardon Way, Kings Norton, where his body was found. Detectives have carried out a fingertip search of the area and conducted house-to-house inquiries. EVENTS TO BOOST TOURISM Two major sporting events this year are set to boost tourism in Birmingham. From March 14 to 16, the city hosts the athletics World Indoor Championships and then in May it stages the World Badminton Championships. Around 3,500 delegates, officials and media representatives will be staying in the city for the athletics event. All 15,000 tickets have been sold. HOUSE PRICES RISE BY 30% House prices in the West Midlands rose by around 30% during 2002 - the equivalent of £65 a day. Nationwide said strong growth continued in December with the average cost of a home increasing by 1.7% to £117,206. House sales also look set to record the highest level of turnover since 1989, with around 1.6m properties changing hands or 4,400 a day. ROCKER RENEWS MARRIAGE VOWS Birmingham-born rocker Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon have renewed their wedding vows during a New Year's Eve party at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Hundreds of guests looked on, 1970s band Village People played, and their daughter Kelly was a flower girl. The couple married on July 4, 1982, but delayed their celebrations because of Sharon's battle with colon cancer. SAILORS TO HEAR AWARD RESULTS Two Birmingham women are waiting to find out if they have won the Young Sailor of the Year award. Charlotte Savage and Maia Walsh from Edgbaston have been shortlisted along with record-breaker Ellen MacArthur. The winner of the 2002 Yachting Journalists' Association Yachtsman of the Year is being announced on the first day of the 49th London Boat Show. CRASH DRIVER SERIOUSLY ILL A 43-year-old Coventry man is seriously ill in hospital after a road accident in South Yorkshire. The crash happened when the man's Fiat Uno was in collision with a Mitsubishi on the A629 at Thurgoland, Barnsley, at its junction with the B6462. The Fiat driver suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Barnsley District Hospital, police said. £12m BOOST FOR UNIVERSITY SPORT Work is to begin on a multi-million pound upgrade of sports facilities at Coventry University. A sports centre will be built in Whitefriars Street, and three tennis courts and improved facilities will be developed at the Westwood Heath site. The works are part of a £12m investment programme by the university and are set for completion by January 2004. MAN, 24, QUIZZED OVER DEATH A 24-year-old man is being quizzed by detectives after a man was found at his Stafford home with fatal injuries. Officers were called to an address in Highfields on the night of New Year's Eve and found a 58-year-old man with serious injuries. Paramedics took the man to Stafford District Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival. MANHUNT AFTER GIRLS SHOT DEAD Police are hunting gunmen who shot dead two teenage girls and injured another two after a dispute at a New Year party in a hairdresser's salon in Birmingham. Two of the victims were 18-year-old twin sisters who had been enjoying festivities with about 30 revellers at Uniseven Studios in Aston. Police have launched a murder inquiry, calling the shootings "unprecedented". SHOPS SHUT AMID SHOOTINGS PROBE A Birmingham hair salon and 20 other shops remain closed as police carry out a fingertip search of the area where two teenage girls were shot dead. A ballistics expert is examining spent rounds found on the ground at the rear of Uniseven Studios in Aston, as well as doors and a car found nearby. Detectives are trying to determine whether there was an exchange of fire. MP COURT CASE RESUMES Proceedings against Coventry North West Labour MP Geoffrey Robinson over a string of alleged driving offences will resume at Walsall Magistrates' Court. The ex-Paymaster General is charged with failing to provide a breath specimen and driving without insurance after being stopped in Walsall. Mr Robinson denies the charges but has yet to enter a formal plea. GIRL, 12, RAPED AT KNIFEPOINT A 12-year-old girl was raped near a busy main road after being abducted at knifepoint in Wolverhampton, police have revealed. They are appealing for information about the alleged attack in Ward Grove, Lanesfield, on November 6 which was only recently reported to them. The offender is described as black, aged 40-50, about 5ft 5in and stocky. FRESH APPEAL IN ROBBERY PROBE Police investigating a robbery at a post office in Wolverhampton have issued a fresh appeal for information. A raider struck at Deepfields Post Office in Shaw Road, Coseley, at about 11.20am on December 23, shortly after a quantity of cash had been delivered. He is described as a white man aged between 25 and 30, about 5ft 9in and of thin build. TWO KILLED IN M-WAY SMASH Two people have been killed and another seriously injured after a vehicle crashed through the central reservation of a motorway near Redditch, Worcs. The accident happened between junctions two and three of the M42 when a vehicle travelling southbound went through the barrier and into oncoming traffic. Police are appealing for witnesses to the fatal crash to contact them. UNIVERSITY HOSTS SCIENCE EVENT More than 3,000 teachers and educators from all over the world are set to converge in Birmingham for an "extravaganza" of science activities. Visitors from nearly 50 countries are expected to attend the Association for Science Education annual meeting at the University of Birmingham. Delegates will be able to attend more than 400 seminars at the event. CITY JOINS TOP 10 RENT LIST Birmingham is now one of the world's 10 most expensive business locations, a report on commercial rents has found. Property consultants DTZ looked at rent and outgoings in 92 business districts from 44 countries during 2002. At £91.12 per sq ft, London's West End tops the list, while Birmingham came sixth at £40.31. The only US top 10 entry was New York Midtown in seventh. NEW FLOOD BARRIERS IN PLACE The Environment Agency has erected new demountable flood barriers along Severnside North in Worcestershire, as a precautionary measure. A flood warning through Bewdley remains in force, although experts believe that there is no imminent danger. The £4m barriers, which will be removed once the threat of flooding has passed, took nine months to construct. PUB FIRM BUYS RIVAL GROUP Burton-based group Punch Taverns has added a further 61 premises to its expanding estate, with the acquisition of Conquest Inns. Britain's second biggest pubs owner paid £26.1m for the firm, which operates the tenanted pubs in London, East Anglia and the South East. The sale brings the number of pubs acquired by Punch since August to 191. SHOOTING PROBE CONTINUES Birmingham detectives are continuing to investigate the killing of two teenage girls and the wounding of two others during a shooting on New Year's Day. Police are probing the possibility that the shootout in Aston was part of a feud between rival drugs gangs. West Midlands Police Chief Constable Paul Scott-Lee has pledged that the killers will be brought to justice. WOMAN INJURES MAN'S EYE A man is in hospital with a serious eye injury after being attacked by a woman as he left a Nuneaton pub. It was thought the 34-year-old victim had been bitten but officers have now revealed the injuries were caused by a weapon or fist. The man was attacked as he left the Courtyard Pun and is being treated at the Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital. TWO MEN KILLED IN SMASH Two men have died and another is critically ill after a road accident near Ashbourne, in Derbyshire. Two passengers in a Toyota Supra were killed when the car collided with a Vauxhall Vectra at Osmaston crossroads. The Toyota driver is seriously ill in Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. Two of the four Vauxhall occupants have minor injuries. 130 DRINK-DRIVERS REPORTED Police in Derbyshire have revealed that they received 130 calls following a campaign to tackle known drink-drivers. People were asked to report those they suspected of the offence and officers acted on all the information. A total of 143 motorists were caught drink driving over Christmas, compared with 113 in 2001. Breath tests were carried out on 5,278 drivers. CONTRACT FOR CHIEF CONSTABLE The Chief Constable of Staffordshire is to remain in his post for another three years, it has been announced. The Staffordshire Police Authority said that John Giffard's contract had been extended until March 2006. Michael Poulter, chairman of the authority, said: "The extension of his contract augurs well for continuing progress in the future." ORCHESTRA PLAYS RING TONES A performance of classical mobile phone tunes has taken place at Birmingham's Symphony Hall. The concert has been welcomed by the city's European Capital of Culture bid for helping to introduce children to classical music. The English Symphony Orchestra restored popular ring tones such as Wagner's Valkyries to their full glory. PUPILS GET NEW BUILDINGS Pupils at a north Warwickshire primary school are set to move into state-of-the-art new buildings. Woodside C of E Primary School - formed by the amalgamation of Baddesley Ensor Junior and Infant schools - will be based at a new £1.2m development. The new facilities include a library, a purpose-built music room, classrooms, changing rooms and ICT facilities. COUNCIL RESCUES BUS ROUTES Worcestershire County Council has rescued a number of bus routes in the north of the county. The council said several services due to be withdrawn by operator First from Monday would continue, with the aid of a temporary subsidy increase. The local authority's Cabinet has decided to plough an extra £300,000 into subsidies until August. CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING SCHEME Councillors in Nottinghamshire hope to top last year's recycling record of 10,000 Christmas trees. A scheme to dispose of trees has been extended to 18 sites in the county and one in Nottingham itself. The trees are chipped and converted into mulch, which will be used at schools and council buildings. For details of the sites call 0115 9772019. BISHOP APPOINTS LAY MINISTERS The Bishop of Lichfield has authorised the appointment of 29 lay ministers at a service in the city's cathedral. The ministers are not being ordained, but will work alongside clergy in a variety of roles, including reader, outreach leader and prayer guide. They will work in Church of England parishes in towns including Stafford, Shrewsbury and Stoke-on-Trent. 7th. January 2003 POLICE HOPE FOR APPEAL RESULTS Police are hoping that an emotional appeal for information will encourage witnesses to a double fatal shooting in Birmingham to come forward. Marcia Shakespeare made a plea for information over the deaths of her daughter Letisha, 17, and niece Charlene, 18, in Aston. Charlene's twin, Sophie, and Cheryl Shaw, 17, were also injured. POP STARS JOIN MOURNERS Chart-toppers Girls Aloud were among some 100 mourners at the Stafford funeral of their tour manager who was killed in a car crash on Christmas Day. John McMahon, 43, of Eccleshall, near Stafford, was killed when the band's touring vehicle left the A5013, near Cresswell and hit a telegraph pole. Mourners gathered at St Austin's Church also included singer Craig David. CRIME SQUAD HUNT FOUR MEN The National Crime Squad has named four men from the West Midlands who are being sought in connection with organised crime in the region. Detective Chief Superintendent Dave King appealed for help in tracing Keith Harrison, Alan Jones, Anthony Spencer and Javaid Chaudhary. "These are all people we would very much like to talk to," he said. UNION LEADER'S NEW JOB A teetotal soccer fan who used to work in a Birmingham car factory is poised to take over one of the most important jobs in the trade union movement. Dave Osborne, 56, will start work as motor industry national secretary of the TGWU, which represents more than 60,000 workers in the car industry. A former Longbridge shop steward, Mr Osborne takes over from Tony Woodley. APPEAL FOR MISSING MAN Police are appealing for help in tracing a 66-year-old man who is missing from a Birmingham care home. George Payne, who is described as vulnerable, was reported missing on Saturday night from his home in Turfpitts Lane, Kingstanding. He is white, 6ft, with grey hair and blue eyes. He wears glasses and was clean shaven. MP BLASTS THEATRE CLOSURE Worcester MP Michael Foster has condemned the decision to close the city's Swan Theatre at the end of the month. The Labour MP said: "It is a sad day for Worcester - the city council has killed off the Swan Theatre." "They have ignored the wishes of some 13,000 people who signed a petition for the Swan to be saved." BOXING DAY TRANSPORT 'SUCCESS' Transport chiefs in the West Midlands have hailed the subsidised Boxing Day bus services as a great success. Centro, the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive, said the first services on December 26 since the 1980s had attracted 50,000 people. Councillor Gurdev Manku said hospitals, town centres and football matches had been well served by the venture. BICYCLE PROJECT WINS AWARD A Stafford Borough Council bicycle recycling project has won a prestigious community award. The environmentally-friendly scheme has been given the honour by electricity giant National Grid for supporting sustainable development. Under the project people with mental health problems will be employed to renovate discarded bicycles. MAN ROBBED IN ALLEYWAY ATTACK A man has been robbed of his mobile phone and credit cards in an attack in Birmingham, police have said. A 46-year-old local man was pushed to the floor and pinned down during the robbery in an alleyway off Stratford Road, Sparkbrook. Police have appealed for help in tracing the offender. Anyone with information should call 0845 113 5000. MP WELCOMES NEW POWERS A Sandwell MP has welcomed new powers which will allow police and customs officers to seize criminals' assets. The Proceeds of Crime Act will mean money can be confiscated from all types of criminals and not just drug dealers, as previous laws allowed. West Bromwich East Labour MP Tom Watson said: "I'm delighted that these new powers have finally come into effect." POLICE HUNT FOR GIRL'S BROTHER The brother of a girl killed during a shoot-out between rival gangs at a New Year party in Birmingham may have witnessed the tragic event. Police are looking for Marcus Ellis, 23, after 17-year-old Letisha Shakespeare and Charlene Ellis, 18, were killed in the violent clash. Ellis is believed to be a member of one of the gangs involved in the shoot-out. POLICE CONCERNED AT NEW FIGURES West Midlands Police have blasted drivers after the number of motorists arrested over the Christmas period for drinking and driving increased by 70%. Officers arrested 407 people for providing a positive sample, failing to provide a sample or on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. The figures compare with just 239 during the same period last year. PATIENTS WERE FONDLED - COURT A Derbyshire consultant psychiatrist fondled women patients and gave them unnecessary examinations, Nottingham Crown Court has been told. Dr Himanshu Ghadiali, 56, from Ashbourne, denies three charges of indecently assaulting three women at his Derby clinic between 1996 and 1999. He groped the women while looking for other ailments, prosecutors said. FRESH APPEAL OVER STREET DEATH Detectives investigating the death of a man whose body was discovered in a West Bromwich street have made a fresh appeal for information. Philip Gould, 39, was found in Duchess Parade in the early hours of January 1, after a night at Barnaby's nightclub. Officers are continuing to attempt to build a picture of Mr Gould's movements that evening. MP BLASTS HOSPITAL PLANS Crewe and Nantwich MP Gwyneth Dunwoody has said plans for foundation hospitals are among "one of the worst ideas" the Government has come up with. The new hospitals would be "divisive", the Labour MP warned as she urged the Government to reconsider its controversial plans. "Ordinary members of the Labour Party will not accept this," she added. HUSBAND DENIES MURDER ATTEMPT A Birmingham man charged with slashing his wife's throat in a busy job centre has been remanded in custody after appearing at Luton Crown Court. Mohammed Ahmed, 25, of Albert Road, denies the charge of attempted murder. Ahmed is accused of attacking his wife, Nargis Jahan, 21, with a knife while she was at a job centre in Mill Street, Luton, on October 25 last year. QUICK DATES FOR BUSY WORKERS Birmingham-based Quickdatesuk is offering busy professionals the chance to have 25 dates in the same evening. ANGER AFTER WOMAN LOSES CLAIM A disabled Warwickshire woman reacted with anger after losing her claim for discrimination against charity Scope. Sarah Davies, who suffers from cerebral palsy, told an employment tribunal she felt "humiliated" after a job interview for the disabled rights charity. Miss Davies, from Coleshill, felt she was not given adequate computer equipment to perform her presentation. DOG OWNER CHARGED OVER ATTACK A Wolverhampton dog owner has been charged over an attack in which a young girl was left permanently scarred. The 23-year-old woman will appear before Wolverhampton magistrates on Thursday to face charges of allowing a dog to cause injury in a private place. The charges relate to an attack on Leah Preston in the garden of her family's home in Hawksford Crescent, Low Hill. MEN FACE TRIAL OVER KIDNAP Three West Midlands men accused of kidnapping and holding a man captive are set to go on trial. Mohammed Ishtiaq, Mohammed Khan Iltaf, both from Moseley, and Azmat Khan, from Greet, will appear before Oxford Crown Court on Friday. They are charged with kidnap and holding a man captive for three days. They have all been released on bail. GUN DEATH INQUEST TO OPEN An inquest into the death of one of two Birmingham teenage girls gunned down at a New Year party is due to open. Eighteen-year-old Charlene Ellis was caught in a hail of bullets outside a hair salon in Birchfield Road, Aston, a week ago as two gangs clashed. Post-mortem tests revealed Charlene, who died from head wounds, was struck three times by machine gun bullets. CANDLELIT VIGIL FOR DEAD GIRLS Hundreds of people have gathered for a vigil in memory of two Birmingham teenage cousins who were gunned down. Members of the community in Aston paid tribute to Charlene Ellis, 18, and Letisha Shakespeare, 17, who were shot dead outside a New Year party. The candlelit vigil started in Holy Trinity Birchfield Parish Church, just yards from the scene of the shooting. WOMAN IN COURT OVER DOG ATTACK A woman dog owner from Wolverhampton is to appear in court over an attack which left a young girl permanently scarred. The 23-year-old is due at Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court to face charges of allowing a dog to cause injury. The case relates to an attack last May by two bull mastiff cross-breeds on Leah Preston, who was five at the time, at her home in Low Hill. GIRLS 'SNATCHED FOR DRUG DEAL' A Birmingham man snatched two schoolgirls from a street in broad daylight and forced them to front a drug dealing operation, a court heard. The girls, both 15, were driven to Southampton after they were abducted in Hackney, Southwark Crown Court heard. Trevor Daniels, 22, of Birmingham, and Anthony Hill, 23, of Birkenhead, deny kidnapping and drugs charges. NEW STATION COULD BE DEMOLISHED Transport officials have confirmed they are considering demolishing Rugby railway station just months after spending £8m on refurbishments. The station could be bulldozed after the Strategic Rail Authority said it was discussing routing two high-speed tracks through the site of the station. An SRA spokesman said they would look at relocating the existing building. WARNING OVER RIVER SWIMS Police have issued a safety warning after a group of young boys was spotted trying to swim across the River Severn in Shrewsbury as a dare. Police said they were stunned when a seven-year-old, who was shivering and dripping wet, was marched into a police station by his father in the town. PC Bob Fryer warned children were "risking their lives" with such dares. WOMAN SUFFERS ROAD RAGE ATTACK A "road rage" driver forced a female motorist to make an emergency stop before attempting to smash the car's windows, police in Shropshire said. Police said the woman was found in a traumatised and hysterical state beside the A442 at Norton. The man, who was driving a Lada, is described as being in his late 30s or 40s, about 5ft 10in, with ginger hair. COW DISRUPTS RAIL SERVICES There was "extensive disruption" on a major West Midlands rail route after a train hit a cow on the tracks. The 1545 service from Euston to Wolverhampton had to be towed to Rugby after being severely damaged in the incident in Brandon, south of Coventry. The line between London and Birmingham was blocked by the Virgin West Coast train, causing delays to services. MUSEUM TO BREAK SOUND BARRIER A Coventry museum has commissioned a simulator which will recreate the thrill of travelling in the supersonic car which smashed the landspeed record. The British Museum of Transport has created a simulator of Thrust SSC - the first car to break the sound barrier at more than 763mph six years ago. The ride will create the feel of the car hurtling across the Nevada desert. HERITAGE RAIL LINE SETS RECORD The Severn Valley Railway has confirmed 2002 was its greatest year, with more than 236,000 passengers using the line. The route, among the region's favourite tourist attractions, also saw a boost in revenue for the fifth year in a row. Alan Leach, marketing manager for the 16-mile heritage line, said the passenger record had outstripped the previous best by more than 6,000. INQUEST OPENS INTO GUN DEATH A second inquest is due to open into the fatal shooting of two teenage girls outside a Birmingham New Year party. Coroner Aidan Cotter is due to open and adjourn the hearing into the killing of 17-year-old Letisha Shakespeare. Letisha and her cousin Charlene Ellis, 18, were shot dead in a hail of bullets fired from a sub-machine gun outside a hair salon in Aston. BLUNKETT REBUKES CORONER A coroner who told the black community in Birmingham to "pay back" efforts to accommodate them in society by catching two girls' killers has been rebuked. Aidan Cotter said people in Aston, where Charlene Ellis and Letisha Shakespeare died, should help police. But Home Secretary David Blunkett said: "No-one needs talk of payback as we and they are part of a cohesive community." CORONER 'DID NOT MEAN OFFENCE' A Birmingham coroner insists he did not intend to cause offence by claiming the black community needed to "pay back" efforts to integrate them into society. Aidan Cotter said his reference to the "community" was meant to include the whole of Birmingham. Mr Cotter said: "There must be people who know what is happening, who is involved, who is running and hiding." STILL MUCH TO BE DONE - POLICE West Midlands Police have said there is "still much to be done" to cut gun crime after figures revealed offences have soared in the city. Guns were used in 1,289 crimes between April 2001 and April 2002, compared with 887 in the previous 12 months. A police spokesman said that, despite the murders of two teenagers in Aston, "serious incidents were few in number". FOUR INJURED IN COACH CRASH Four children have been injured after their coach was involved in a collision with a lorry on the M6 in Cheshire. The ambulance service said the children were only slightly injured in the accident near Sandbach services. Fourty-eight pupils from Sandbach High School were on the coach. Three of the children have been taken to hospital with minor injuries. MOTHER GUILTY OF SEX CRIME A married mother-of-three who had a secret lesbian affair with a teenage girl has been found guilty of indecent assault at Birmingham Crown Court. Susan Beesley, 39, was convicted of three counts of indecent assault and one of child abduction. Beesley, of Longbridge, will be put on the sex offenders' register. She had denied the charges. STAR'S ATTACKER DUE IN COURT The man jailed for stabbing Coronation Street star John Savident in the neck is due to be sentenced for tying up and robbing a woman at her Birmingham flat. Michael Smith was sentenced to seven years for attacking Savident at his luxury Manchester flat two years ago. Smith, who will appear at Manchester Crown Court, was told to expect a "long term of custody" for the flat robbery. EURO MP SLAMS ASSEMBLY PLANS A regional assembly would be a disaster for Burton-on-Trent, a West Midlands Euro MP has told the town's residents. A Birmingham-based devolved government for the whole region would spell higher taxes, less representation and "fat cat politicians", Philip Bradbourn said. The Tory MEP spoke during the last leg of a tour of the region to speak about the proposed regional assembly. DRUGS GIRL 'FEARED FOR LIFE' A 15-year-old girl feared she would be raped and killed after she and a friend were allegedly abducted by a Birmingham man, Southwark Crown Court has heard. Trevor Daniels, 22, of Lichfield Road, and Anthony Hill, 23, of Liverpool deny charges of kidnapping and of possessing drugs with intent to supply. The girl said she was forced to act as an "innocent face" during drug deals. JOBS AT RISK OVER CLOSURE Electricity firm Powergen is planning to close a Staffordshire power station which could lead to the loss of more than 80 jobs, it has been announced. The group is planning to close Drakelow C power station, near Burton-on-Trent, which employs 88 staff. It is hoped other positions can be found for staff, but compulsory redundancies have not been ruled out. MAN ARRESTED OVER DEATH A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a man during
a disturbance in Stoke-on-Trent, police have said. Officers and ambulance
crews were called to Anna Walk, Burslem, after reports of trouble. A man
was taken to hospital where he died. His death is now being treated as
suspicious, police confirmed.
