DOCTOR CHARGED WITH MISCONDUCT A paediatrician at North Staffordshire Hospital in Stoke is appearing before the General Medical Council charged with serious professional misconduct. Prof David Southall alleged that the husband of Sally Clark, who was found guilty but acquitted of killing two babies, was responsible for the deaths. Prof Southall made the claims after Steve Clark was interviewed on TV. HEROES GATHER AT MEMORIAL D-Day veterans have gathered for a day of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Those present watched the live service from the Bayeux Commonwealth War Graves cemetery in France in a marquee. A wreath-laying ceremony followed at the Garden of Remembrance and then there was a poppy drop from a Hercules aircraft following the service. NEW £1m POLICE STATION OPENS A new £1m police station has been opened to the public in Burntwood, Staffordshire. The centre was built on the site of a former police station in the High Street, Chasetown. The new building replaces the single-storey station and police houses which were built in the early 1960s, before the local population boom. EXPERTS TO ASSESS HOUSE DAMAGE Structural engineers are assessing the damage done to a Warwickshire house hit by a stolen lorry. The vehicle crashed into the front hall and lounge of the property in Knoll Drive, Warwick, and became embedded. The driver, 19, from Stapleford, Notts, received spinal injuries and broken ribs. Resident Geoffrey Middleton, 79, and his grandson, five, were unhurt. M-WAY RESURFACING WORK BEGINS Motorists using the M6 near Birmingham are being warned to expect delays over the next five months as a £15m resurfacing scheme gets under way. Work is starting to tackle the recurring problem of potholes, a phenomenon which caused severe delays over the winter and spring months. Two lanes will be open to traffic in each direction while the work is done. MANAGER CRITICISES BUSINESS A former manager of Walsall Football Club is calling on the sport to develop more ethical policies in face of increased globalisation. Peter Hart, now vicar of St Luke's Church in Cannock, claims big business is destroying the beautiful game. Rev Hart said football used to be about community involvement, but that the focus now "is on executive boxes". PIPE-SMOKING CHAMPION CROWNED A man from Birmingham has been crowned the new British pipe-smoking champion. Reg Stevens, 62, beat off stiff competition from 40 other enthusiasts at the Old Silhillians Sports Club in Solihull to fight for the title. Organisers said the self-employed courier driver puffed his way into the history books with a time of one hour and 21 minutes. FIRE CREWS FIGHT HOSPITAL FIRE More than 40 firefighters were called to tackle a severe fire in the grounds of a hospital in Stratford-upon-Avon. Crews were called to a single-storey derelict outbuilding at Stratford Hospital, in Arden Street. Crews from Stratford, Leamington Spa, Atherstone, Warwick and Coleshill tackled the blaze. No-one was injured in the incident. POLICE CRACK DOWN ON ROWDIES Police in Tamworth have launched a summertime crackdown on yobbish and nuisance behaviour. Officers are being deployed on high-visibility patrols across known hot-spots, and a new mobile CCTV system is being used to catch troublemakers. Inspector Jed White said problems with anti-social behaviour usually occured in the summer during warmer weather. MOTORWAY REOPENS AFTER CRASH Police have reopened a stretch of the M5 in the West Midlands following a collision which injured three people. The trio were rescued from a vehicle which hit the central reservation near Junction 2 of the northbound carriageway near Oldbury. The casualties were taken to hospital by air and road ambulance. Their injuries are not thought to be serious. BOY DROWNS AT FISHING LAKE A teenager has drowned at a fishing lake in the West Midlands but two youths were rescued, police said. Police were alerted to members of the public trying to rescue the youths, who had got into difficulty while playing on a raft in Rocket Pool in Bilston. A helicopter used thermal imaging equipment to look for a 16-year-old youth, who was later pronounced dead. VERDICT IN MINIBUS DEATH CRASH An inquest into a minibus crash which killed three Ledbury holidaymakers has recorded a verdict of accidental death. Coroner Leonard Gorodkin told Manchester Coroner's Court that "driver error and not excessive speed" was behind the Britannia Hotel bus crash. Ryan McCoig-Lees and his parents Martin and Denise were among seven killed in the M56 crash in Greater Manchester. FORENSIC SCIENTISTS HOLD STRIKE Forensic scientists in Birmingham will picket their laboratory as the Forensic Science Service stages its first ever strike in a long-running pay dispute. More than 1,600 employees across England and Wales are due to take part in the industrial action in protest at a pay offer unions said was worth 1.1%. The FSS said about 1,000 non-union members will be working as usual. HOLD INTEREST RATE: BUSINESSES Birmingham business leaders have urged the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee not to raise interest rates. The Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which represents nearly 4,000 companies, said a second rate hike in as many months would damage business. President David Grove said: "A further interest rise will severely set back any slight recovery in manufacturing." INSPECTIONS TO CUT SITE DEATHS Health and safety inspectors have begun a scheme to cut the number of accidents on building sites in Warwickshire. Staff are touring the county checking for hazards and advising employers to make changes where necessary. The Health and Safety Executive said two people died and 34 people were seriously injured on building sites in Warwickshire between 2002 and 2003. FATHER ATTACKS EXPERT'S CLAIM The husband of cleared solicitor Sally Clark said he thought it was "a sick joke" when a Stoke on Trent doctor accused him of killing his sons. Steve Clark, 42, was giving evidence in the case against Professor David Southall at a hearing of the General Medical Council in Manchester. The North Staffordshire Hospital doctor made his claim over a TV interview REWARD OFFERED FOR RAIDERS Securicor has offered a £50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of armed robbers who shot a worker in the leg during a raid in Birmingham. Three offenders are thought to have been involved in the raid in Bartley Green, which occurred outside a shop. Two of the men threatened a security guard and shot him in the leg before escaping with a quantity of cash. NURSE DENIES MURDER ATTEMPTS A nurse accused of trying to kill four elderly patients at a Crewe hospital has told the court she would "never hasten anybody's death". Barbara Salisbury is accused of trying to murder James Byrne, 76, May Taylor, 88, Frank Owen, 92, and Reuben Thompson, 81, at Leighton Hospital. Salisbury, 47, of North Wales, denies all charges at Chester Crown Court. VETERAN'S PHOTOS TAKEN WITH CAR A Second World War veteran from Staffs who missed a D-Day service when thieves stole his car has appealed for help to recover old Navy photos in the vehicle. Tom Clay, 80, of Norton Canes, near Cannock, left the keys in his black Ford Granada Ghia after returning home following a trip to the shops. A local businessman has offered a £200 reward for the return of the photos. MISSING PRISONER RECAPTURED A prisoner who absconded from an open jail has been recaptured in Warslow, near Leek, in an operation involving armed police and a force helicopter. Isaac John Price will now face questioning about a series of robberies in Shropshire and Worcestershire, a police spokesman said. Price went missing from HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire last June. MOTORCYCLIST KILLED IN CRASH A motorcylist has been killed in an accident on the A520 in Stone, Staffordshire, police said. The victim, a 30-year-old local man, was pronounced dead after his Aprilia machine collided with a Volvo estate near the junction with Vanity Lane. The car driver, a 50-year-old woman, was treated by paramedics at the scene for minor injuries. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CRACKDOWN Staffordshire Police have pledged to crack down on domestic violence amid fears the Euro 2004 campaign could herald an increase in wife-beating. A spokesman said the World Cup in Japan saw a rise in the number of calls to a helpline which offers support to domestic attack victims. The Pathway Project reported a 40% surge during the 2002 World Cup. MAN DENIES MURDERING TEENAGER A 16-year-old Birmingham boy suffered a fatal knife wound when he was stabbed by his mother's ex-lover during a fight, Stafford Crown Court has heard. Jahmaine Downer died in hospital three days after the confrontation. Anthony Blair, a Jamaican national, denies murdering Downer, who attacked the 34-year-old after he was charged with assaulting his mother. MAN KILLED OVER MINOR CRASH A man was fatally stabbed by another motorist following a minor road collision on a busy city highway, Birmingham Crown Court has heard. Patrick Hemmings, 42, is accused of stabbing Junior Powell, 28, three times after bumping into his vehicle. Mr Powell, a Jamaican national living in Birmingham, died within minutes of the attack in Villa Road, Lozells. THIEVES TARGET SECURITY GUARD Three "hooded" robbers escaped with cash after attacking a security guard as she collected takings from a Warwickshire petrol station. The thieves struck at Dordon service station on the A5 Watling Street, near Atherstone, before escaping in a stolen Skoda Octavia. Warwickshire Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. DROWNED TEENAGER WAS A HERO A Wolverhampton boy who died while trying to save a friend from drowning has been described as a quiet boy whose heroic actions were typical of him. Teacher Karen Wild said Jason Mansell was a lovely boy whose death had shocked students and staff alike. Sixteen-year-old Jason died after diving into a fishing pool to help Luke Pugh, 13, in Bilston, West Midlands. POLICE TO CAUTION ROWDY FANS Police and licensees in Warwick, Leamington and Kenilworth have teamed up in a bid to kick violence into touch during the Euro 2004 tournament. Warwickshire Police will distribute "yellow card" leaflets with the message that violence will not be tolerated. Chf Insp Chris Jackson said: "A yellow card spells out that drinkers can stay if they do not cause trouble." MAN CHARGED AFTER KNIFE ATTACK A man has been charged in connection with a stabbing in Warwick in which two local men were seriously injured. Tajinder Thiara, 29, of William Tarver Close is accused of two counts of wounding following the incident outside the Avon Tavern pub in Pickard Street. One victim, aged 24, sustained a stab wound to his stomach, the other, aged 27, suffered a collapsed lung. DEBUT NOVELIST WINS AWARD Dudley-born Anthony Cartwright has said he is delighted to have won a top award for his debut novel. He won the Betty Trask Award for novelists under 35 for The Afterglow, which has been praised for its use of the Black Country dialect. The 30-year-old English teacher was presented with his £3,000 prize at a Society of Authors ceremony in London. TORIES GAIN CONTROL OF COUNCIL The Tories have won control of Tamworth Borough Council from Labour by winning eight of the 10 seats contested. The Conservatives - who gained seats in five wards from Labour - now have 16 of the authority's 30 seats. Labour won in the Bolehall and Glascote wards and lost out by just six votes to Tory Mary Oates in Wilnecote. Turnout reached a high of 39.6% in Spital ward. LABOUR REGAINS COUNCIL CONTROL Labour has regained its status as the majority party on Stoke City Council by winning 13 of the 19 seats contested. But the British National Party's predicted widespread success in the "Super Thursday" city council elections failed to materialise. The far-right party made a gain in the Longton North ward, but lost a seat it was defending in Norton and Bradeley. DRINKS GIANT SELLS BREWERY Almost 1,000 new homes could be built on the 70-acre brewery site in Cape Hill in Smethwick. The former Mitchells and Butlers and Coors brewery has been sold to Persimmon Homes for £25m. Proposals to build on the site will require planning permission. US drinks giant Coors announced it had sold the site, which ceased production in 2002. POLICE BID TO STOP HOOLIGANS Police officers across the West Midlands are continuing to patrol airports in a bid to prevent football hooligans travelling to Euro 2004. A large scale operation is in place at Birmingham International Airport to stop troublemakers getting to Portugal. Warwickshire Police said officers at Coventry Airport were also looking for hooligans subject to banning orders. OFFICERS MAY FACE MORE CHARGES Police officers may face more charges after the death of a Birmingham man who collapsed in custody after being struck by a patrol car, an inquest has heard. Two officers have been charged with common assault against Michael Powell, 38. Six have so far been suspended. Supt Bill Mandeville, of Northants Police, told the inquest he expected more serious charges to be brought. THUNDERBIRDS T-SHIRTS ARE GONE Eight hundred Thunderbirds T-shirts bearing the International Rescue logo have been stolen from Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre. The garments, worth £5,000, were taken along with 400 FAB 1 pink toy cars during the recent Motor Show. The merchandise was due to go on sale with the release of a new film based on the popular television programme. POLICE CONCERNED FOR TEENAGER Police believe a missing 17-year-old girl may be travelling to Birmingham to meet a man she met on a plane. Nadia Khan, who police said suffers from mental problems, left her home in north London last Friday. She is in contact with a man called Kamran who she met on a flight from Pakistan two years ago. She was wearing a black jumper and pink trousers. CHILDREN HURT IN ROAD CRASH Eleven people, including nine children, have been injured in a pile-up which involved three cars and a tipper lorry outside a Telford school. The incident near Wrockwardine Wood School left one victim badly injured, Shropshire Ambulance Service said. One child remains in Telford's Princess Royal Hospital with a leg injury, but eight other pupils have been released.
