No.1 Shakespeare
Street
Stratford -Upon-Avon
Warwickshire
CV37 6RN
Tel: 0845 0175 971
www.shakespearestreet.co.uk
No.1 Shakespeare Street is on the site of the old motor museum so
is easy to find. The interior is spacious and airy and combines
comfort with style in a relaxed environment. It has been
designed to make the most of the original features and yet give a modern
feel at the same time. The atmosphere is warm and friendly.
The restaurant offers an extensive menu of starters, vegetarian
options and an A La Carte menu but also boasts a tempting selection
of cuts of meat and fish. You simply choose a Cut such as Sirloin
Steak or Swordfish or even Shark and then you have a
mouth-watering choice of 13 sauces, 8 side dishes, 5 potato dishes
and 6 dips all included in the price of the Cut. The beauty of this
is that the possibilities are virtually endless - even if you chose
the same cut of meat on a number of occasions, you could still have
a totally different dish if you chose different combinations -A Cut
above the rest – one menu hundreds of possibilities.
For a starter, Robert chose the very satisfying Home made soup of
the day (Minestrone) and freshly cut bread for £3.95 while I decided
on Grilled goats cheese with cherry tomatoes, onions and capsicum
served on a bed of balsamic dressed leaves which was a feast of
tastes and textures. We both chose from the Cut menu for our
main courses, with Robert choosing the leg of lamb steak for £14.95,
served with caramelised onion gravy, seasonal vegetables, buttered
new potatoes with mint pesto and a sweet chilli and coriander dip -
all of which he thoroughly enjoyed. I chose the Aubergine Steak
which was beautifully cooked and presented and at £8.95 was very
reasonable. We both chose a dessert from the tempting menu - I went
for raspberry brulee which was deliciously tasty but very light and
Robert had Bread and Butter pudding - with a difference as it was
flavoured with Baileys and served with cappuccino ice cream.
All in all, this was a superb meal a wonderful mixture of flavours,
beautifully presented and served by friendly and attentive staff
There is also a fixed price menu of two courses for £9.95 between
5pm and 7pm Monday to Thursday which would also be ideal for theatre
goers. No.1 Shakespeare Street is open from 10.30 till late
everyday. Visit their website
www.shakespearestreet.co.uk for details of special events and
offers.
Our only slight reservation was that the restaurant proper is
upstairs which would pose difficulties for those with mobility
problems, but there may well be easier access than the stairs which
we were not aware of. However, it is possible to eat downstairs in the bar area (which
several people were doing on the evening we visited) so don't let
this put you off. You could always check first.
