NORTHFIELD MEMORIES
Publication date: August 2003 ISBN: 0 7509 3041 1
John and Jean Smith have been overwhelmed and delighted with the success of their first book, Northfield Past & Present. Following its huge success, they have embarked on a new project to capture the essence of bygone times in Northfield to again show the great importance of recording rapidly disappearing memories in our ever-changing and increasing pace of life. We have all heard the constant comment, ‘Northfield is not what it used to be’. Buildings of character have been demolished and the village centre looks rather tired and dilapidated. With the current rebuilding of housing estates which were erected in haste in the 1960s, together with the proposed regeneration plan, let us hope that in the not too distant future Northfield will once again be an area of which we can all be proud, and future generations living here will learn from past successes and mistakes. Using over 200 previously unseen photographs, kindly loaned by local people, together with their recollections of events over the years, this new book tells the story of Northfield’s development through time and records the area’s heritage. Featuring such topics as streets and buildings, events, people, pastimes and the world of work, this new book is sure to be of great interest to all those who know and love this part of Birmingham. John and Jean Smith have lived in Northfield for many years. John is a well-known local lecturer whose subjects include Northfield, Birmingham and Bourneville. Their first book Northfield Past & Present sold out in just a few weeks. WIN A COPY OF "NORTHFIELD
