The Ordnance Survey Outdoors
Show -
The biggest names in the outdoors will be at The Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show at the NEC in March with one message – “Get out there!” With over one hundred exhibitors under one roof the show will be the ideal place to plan a whole year of activities.
SPEAKERS Ray Mears, Sir Chris Bonington, Alan Hinkes and David Bellamy will all be at the show to inspire the public to get out into the countryside. Ray Mears, from television’s “World of Survival” and “Tracks” will be speaking at the Craghoppers Adventure Travel Theatre on Saturday lunchtime. His talk "Bushcraft, a Step beyond Survival" will be de-bunking the myth that bushcraft is all about survival. With a few basic skills, Ray believes we can live in harmony with nature and wilderness bushcraft can become a way of life.
Visitors can meet world-renowned mountaineers, Alan Hinkes and Sir Chris Bonington. Sir Chris will be speaking at the Berghaus Mountain Theatre. He commented, “Foot and mouth had a terrible effect on the tourist trade in rural communities. This show will be a real boost to the outdoors and encourage people to get back out there.” The Berghaus Mountain Theatre will also feature the best of the Kendal Mountain Film Festival. Alan will be discussing his future plans for Challenge 8000 – his attempt to climb all the world’s 8000 metre plus peaks. Visitors to the Berghaus stand will see exactly what kit Alan will be using on his expedition. David Bellamy, President of the Youth Hostel Association and Wildlife Trusts, will be speaking about “The Green Renaissance”, a worldwide movement to show how the great outdoors is being put back into working order. David said, “The growth of worldwide tourism has meant increased pressure on the ecology of the planet. I’ll be at the show to spread the good news that more and more groups are looking to safeguard tourist hotspots so that we can all enjoy them for a long time to come.”
STONEBEE ENVIRONMENTAL SIMULATION CHAMBER IN ASSOCIATION WITH TRAIL Hailed as “the greatest of all Arctic travellers” by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, polar explorers Richard Weber and Mikhail Malakhov will also be at the show. In 1995 they became the only people to have ever achieved the ‘Polar Grail’, walking from Canada to the North Pole and back, totally unsupported. In Stonebee’s Kit Testing Zone in association with ‘Trail’ Magazine, visitors can experience Arctic temperatures as they step into the Stonebee Environment Simulation Chamber which will plunge them down to a chilling - 30°C! ORDNANCE SURVEY Furthermore, it won’t be just personalities who encourage us to get into the outdoors. The Ordnance Survey is organising events for the young and young at heart with a kid’s treasure hunt and interactive quizzes and games such as “Design Your Own Map”. CLIMB 2002 Climb 2002 in association with Juice – friendly electricity from npower with Greenpeace - will be giving budding rock climbers the chance to have a go at climbing with expert tuition as well as watching the very best of British boulderers in the A5 British Bouldering Championships. RAMBLERS’ ASSOCIATION The Ramblers’ Association “Walking for Health” workshop will be aimed at those new to walking and will be encouraging everyone to get on their feet this spring – whether it’s a walk in the park or a day in the hills. Nick Barrett, Chief Executive of the Ramblers’ Association said, “We’re delighted to be taking part in this exciting and innovative event and in particular to be able to highlight the health benefits of walking with our Walking for Health workshops.” He added, “Promoting use of the countryside for health and recreation provides a very positive and timely boost, not only to the outdoor industry, but to rural communities so badly affected by foot and mouth disease.” RURAL PAVILLIONS IN ASSOCIATION WITH COUNTRY WALKING If you’re looking to explore a new area of the UK and Ireland, “Rural Pavilions” in association with ‘Country Walking’ Magazine is the one-stop source of inspiration. The Cumbria Tourist Board will be there along with organisations such as The Irish Tourist Board and the East of England Tourist Board.
