THE ORDNANCE SURVEY OUTDOORS
SHOW 2003
Discover a year of new adventures in just one day. After the resounding success of last year’s event, The Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show is back for 2003 and it promises to be even bigger and better than the first. The show will be opened by Rural Affairs Minister Alun Michael who is responsible for many aspects of the countryside and outdoors including National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Inland Waterways and Access, Rights of Way and Commons. Taking up nearly three times more floor space, the 2003 show will cover every kind of adventure that outdoor enthusiasts - from all walks of life - would want to see, do or hear.
One exciting new addition for this year is the inclusion of the International Canoe Exhibition 2003. Offering a full range of paddlesport equipment all under one roof, visitors can try out this year’s boats, meet the experts and buy equipment. The Paddlesport Workshop offers a three day programme of talks and discussions to inspire the new as well as the experienced paddler. Freestyle demonstrations in the Wave Box will inspire you with enthusiasm, before you have a go yourself in the Water Theatre where there will also be demonstrations, skill workshops and even canoe ballet. The Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show will also launch the first event of the year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hillary and Tensing’s ascent of the world’s highest mountain, with its Celebration of Everest. This will be an opportunity for a national audience of outdoor enthusiasts to see footage and memorabilia only previously available to a more exclusive audience. The show will be supported by guest speakers including George Band, the youngest member of that first summit team.
The 2003 event will also feature some firm favourites from last year’s show, as well as some welcome new additions. The Walking and Climbing area is back sponsored by Trail Magazine, YHA, The Ramblers and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and has something for everyone who enjoys the great outdoors. There’s Kit Testing sponsored by W L Gore and Trail, the Foot Zone, the YHA Common Room, the Great British Pub plus the new Birdwatching Zone. Also new, is the Brasher’s Walking Workshop, where experts from Brasher will be running sessions on boot fitting. The workshop will feature some of the country’s most famous walkers telling their true life stories full of wit and adventure. Guest speakers include David Cromack advising on better outdoor photography, Tom Hutton from Country Walking demonstrating gear testing and specialists from the BMC and The Ramblers discussing open access and conservation. The Walking Workshop covers everything essential for the perfect walking experience. In the Rural Pavilions area, which this year covers the whole of the country, visitors will find new places to enjoy the outdoors and get away from it all. If you need somewhere to chill out and relax then you’ll find it among the beautiful views in Classic Landscapes, sponsored by Regatta. Whilst the Berghaus Super Theatre gives you the chance to sit back and meet your heroes and listen to expert speakers giving sound advice. Speakers include Sir Chris Bonington speaking about Everest, Alan Hinkes who will also be telling of his adventures on Everest and the 14 Peaks. Leo Holding will be talking of his unique climbing experiences, and David Hempleman-Adams the ballooning adventurer will be telling his tales and offering advice, Alan Ellard will be talking on kayaking and Doug Scott on the environment. Visitors can also seek advice from ex Scout Leader Andrew Cooney who, at just 24 years of age has just become the youngest person ever to get to the South Pole. For a spectacle of endurance and achievement the new and improved Adventure Racing, sponsored by ACG, Renault and Kangoo, has even more mad antics and a public ‘have a go’ course. Experts will be on hand to answer questions and you can try out a wide range of products – from the 1000’s of tents in Tent City to any of the new bikes in Go Biking. Bike testing, can take place on the purpose built on road and off road courses. Exhibitors include Sustrans, CTC, Decathlon UK Ltd, Airnimal, Off Road Training Consultancy, Trans Pennine Trail, Saddle Skeddadle and Madison Cycles. Climb 2003 gives you the opportunity to meet climbers from around Britain, experience the excitement of the competitions and get some professional advice on buying equipment. There are various live international competitions at the show to enjoy. The International Masters Bouldering Championship, a major new competition in the ever popular sport of bouldering will feature the major British and International Climbers, in association with A5. The International Dyno Competition, offers the chance for you to witness another world record attempt to break the one set in 2002. Test your climbing skills on a variety of walls and surfaces in the Have A Go Zone, or be inspired by the talks and discussions taking place in the Mountain Workshop.
