WIN TICKETS TO THE FESTIVAL OF QUILTS AT THE NEC, BIRMINGHAM

The Festival of Quilts
 The NEC, Birmingham
 August 16 – 19

For anyone with an interest in beautiful textiles The Festival of Quilts at The NEC, Birmingham, from August 16 – 19 is the place to be. Widely regarded as Europe’s most extensive and dazzling event in the quilter’s diary, visitors can expect to see over 1,000 stunning quilts with gallery exhibitions from all over the world.
Whether you are a quilt maker, a collector or simply appreciate art this exhibition promises to be a visual feast. With over 300 commercial exhibitors selling unique products from all around the world as well as workshops, lectures, master classes and social functions this Festival is a delightful day out.
One of the main attractions for 2007 is Sunshine and Surprise curated by Yoshiko I. Wada. This eye-opening exhibition offers an exciting glimpse into the vibrant works of African American men and women. It features a selection of 24 quilts made by people from underprivileged communities, limited in resource. With scraps of fabric usually salvaged from worn-out clothes, they assemble quilts of astonishing beauty that show a surprising juxtaposition of colour, pattern and texture and a spirit of expression that is akin to the rhythms of jazz and the power of African art.
Exclusive to the show this year is the European Quilters Association My Country that shows the diversity of European cultures and landscapes in 170 quilts from 17 countries. The collection launches at the Festival of Quilts 2007 and will then be shown in the other member countries of the EQA over the next two years.
Other gallery features include Kaffe Fassett’s By His Own Hand a collection influenced by aboriginal paintings of Australia, Grass Roots Quilting - a celebration of the ‘ordinary’ grass roots quilter, and SAQA (Society of American Quilt Artists) that offer wonderfully diverse subjects from a robot perturbed in its metallic cage to a jarring ‘Heavy Metal’ that explodes with visual noise!
