More Variety For Audiences
Autumn - Winter Season 2002/3
Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s Autumn
& Winter 2002 season will have more productions than before offering
an even greater variety for audiences across the Midlands. There’ll be
16 plays in total - double the amount of work that was on offer last year,
including new works, popular plays and big West End hits.
This busy season marks Artistic Director, Jonathan Church’s second year
at the helm of The REP. His first year
at the theatre witnessed not only a change in the programming but
also a significant increase in attendance:
Jonathan Church says of the new season:
“The last twelve months at The REP
have been a busy and rewarding time for the company. The Autumn & Winter
season 2002/3 reflects the variety and quality of work that audiences seem
to have responded to over the last year. We are using the lessons of last
Autumn to inform our planning and will once again be presenting plays in
repertoire, premieres of new plays, work of appeal to schools and colleges
and family Christmas productions. In addition to this I’m also pleased
to be able to present to Birmingham work by a number of exceptional local
and national theatre companies, many of whom are new to The
REP.”
A highlight of the season is two wonderful award-winning contemporary
comedies – My Night With Reg by Kevin
Elyot and Dealer’s Choice by Patrick
Marber – these will be performed in repertoire by the same company of actors.
Marber’s second play Closer was presented in rep with Noel Coward’s Private
Lives last year to great success. As Jonathan Church explains:
“Private Lives and Closer demonstrated that audiences enjoy seeing
the same company of actors tackle very different plays. Although Dealer’s
Choice and My Night With Reg are both contemporary pieces, they are written
in very different styles and have very different themes. I’m hoping that
Birmingham audiences will welcome the chance to see these two plays and
that if they come to one and enjoy the experience, they will be tempted
to see the other.”
The REP is also opening two major
West End plays that will start at the theatre before embarking on major
UK tours. Marie Jones’ hilarious comedy, Stones
In His Pockets kicks off the Autumn season which finishes with
Stephen Daldry’s acclaimed National Theatre production of J.B Priestly’s
An Inspector Calls.
In October, a dramatisation of The Diary Of
Anne Frank will mark the 60th anniversary year of Anne first
writing her diaries. This new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, originally
produced on Broadway in 1997 to outstanding critical acclaim, will give
an extraordinary account of the years Anne endured in hiding in Nazi-occupied
Amsterdam. Following this The REP will
warmly welcome Max Stafford-Clark’s award winning company, Out of Joint,
with a unique opportunity to see the Oliver Goldsmith’s classic comedy,
She Stoops To Conquer, and also the
world premiere of April De Angelis’ A Laughing
Matter – these two companion plays will be performed by the
same company of actors in repertoire.
Building on the success of The REP’s
Christmas productions last year, the theatre is presenting two productions
for the family. In the Main House we will present J.M. Barrie’s magical
play Peter Pan with Matthew Kelly returning
to the theatre to play Captain Hook and, for younger theatre goers in The
Door we will present The Ugly Eagle,
a story based on the tale The Ugly Duckling and a South African folk story
which is a collaboration with local company Moving Hands.
The Door, The REP’s smaller studio
theatre has an equally busy programme of work continuing its commitment
to present new writers and their work. The theatre will be welcoming the
National Theatre production of Sanctuary
by Tanika Gupta, the return of Tamasha Theatre Company with
Ryman And The Sheik, as well as new work by Bryony Lavery, Howard
Barker and the British premiere of August Wilson’s
King Hedley II.
Alongside this programme of new work The REP
will be continuing its support of new writers through a programme of work
with the National Academy of Writing and the annual Transmissions Festival
for young writers. For the first time ever the theatre has appointed a
Poet-in-Residence, Birmingham based Roshan Doug who will be organising
various events and readings throughout the Autumn.
The REP’s work continues outside
of the theatre as well. Hobson’s Choice which opened at The
REP in March of this year is currently enjoying a successful
tour of the UK whilst the theatre’s previously acclaimed production of
Bryony Lavery’s Frozen will open at the National Theatre in July.
