The Robin Hood Toby Carvery

Stratford Road Hall Green Birmingham B28 9ES 0121 744 1041

For traditional British food with that "home cooked" taste, there's nothing like a carvery!  We recently visited the Robin Hood Toby Carvery in Hall Green and greatly enjoyed the traditional carvery with all the trimmings. They offer a choice of  three freshly roasted joints - beef, turkey and mustard glazed gammon, complimented by  eight seasonal  steamed and roasted vegetables, home-cooked Yorkshire puddings, stuffing and a selection of tasty sauces and gravies. All this for only £6.50 on Monday to Friday after 7pm or £8 on Saturday after 7pm and all day Sunday or, for those who prefer to eat earlier, if you dine before 7pm, Mon - Sat., you can eat all this for the bargain price of only £5.25!

There is a good choice of starters, with prices ranging from £1.99 for traditional Tomato Soup to £3.50 for Spicy Lamb Kebab or Chicken Tikka.  I had Classic Prawn Cocktail which was delicious and generous in size and Robert had the Chicken Tikka which he really enjoyed - both were nicely presented and a good start to our meal. We both had the carvery, although there is a good selection of alternatives should you decide to opt for those instead. As I don't eat meat, I had just the vegetables but didn't feel hard done by in any way as the choice was good and the cauliflower cheese was particularly appetising. Against our better judgement, as we were now feeling rather full to say the least - we both made a choice from the Puddings menu.  I liked the sound of the Cherry Pie for £2.99 which lived up to my expectations and Robert had the Toby Crumble (£3.10) which was about the size of the one I would normally serve to a family of four!  Both were served with lashings of custard from the Toby "bottomless custard jug" which is refilled for you should you actually be able to eat it all!

The surroundings are very pleasant with lots of interesting pictures on the walls and there is plenty of room between the tables so you don't feel cramped or as if the people on the next table are going to join in with your conversation.  The service was excellent - from the friendly welcome when we arrived right through to the end of our meal.

A lot is said and written about the many varied types of food and restaurants now available to choose from but with a Toby Carvery you always have a good idea as to what you will get, good traditional English food that is well cooked, well presented and as much as suits your appetite, and now with the very varied choice of starters they also have adapted to the modern trend towards more "exotic" dishes.

Perhaps this isn't the type of restaurant to choose for an intimate candlelit dinner for two but for unpretentious but well presented food and comfortable surroundings, we would certainly recommend the Robin Hood Toby Carvery.
