**WIN A DVD** WIN A DVD**WIN A DVD

If Mike Leigh had written a comedy series, interspersed with the surrealism of The Green Wing, it would have been something like this.

It’s been almost five years since the first of this BAFTA-nominated series written by Sean Lock and Mark Lamarr aired, and it has gained something of a status as the ‘one that started it all’. With series such as Shameless and the forthcoming Skins taking obvious inspiration from its irreverent and colourful portrayal of the Britain ’s miscreants, it’s easy to see how 15 Storeys High’s popularity has continued to grow since the final series aired on the BBC.

Fifteen Storeys High follows the misadventures of flat-owner Vince (played by Sean Lock) and his new lodger Errol (Benedict Wong). It becomes obvious very quickly that Vince has spent too much time living on his own and as a result is completely intolerant of anyone else (imagine a cantankerous, slothful, mean-spirited old man packed into the body of a 37-year old and you’ve pretty much got the measure of him). In contrast, Errol is the mild-mannered, considered flat-mate who remains wholly tolerant (if not slightly bemused) by his strange landlord, whose idea of fun consists of shouting at unsuspecting cyclists from his fifteenth story flat in order to knock them off their bikes and whose neuroses about being touched stems from a childhood experience of being rugby-tackled by The Wombles on the set of Jim’ll Fix It.

The really surreal scenes, however, take place away from the main action, as the flat-mates’ dramas are interspersed with brief flashes of the lives of the other occupants of the tower block, including Bible bashers, lap dancers, hopeless stoners, embryonic boy bands, hygiene obsessives and a Shetland pony.

Hailed as a comic masterpiece the first time round, the series have lost nothing of their surrealism, innovation or humour. With extras including commentaries on four of the episodes by the writers, director and producer, as well as a documentary on the writing of the series by Mark Lamarr and Sean Lock, this is a must-have for anyone who enjoys the slightly darker side of British comedy and life.

What the critics say.....
‘We’re fed up of telling you how good it is – if you’re not watching it, you’re fools. Don’t make us come round there’ Guardian

‘It should not take more than six minutes of your time to realize that this is the best comedy on television.’ The Sunday Times

‘Extraordinary well-written comedy with plot strands and incidental characters worthy of vintage Seinfeld.’ The Times

‘Sean Lock's bizarre and quite brilliant sitcom.’ Evening Standard

‘Inspired high-rise laughs. Creeps up on you like a deft thief on the tube.’ Guardian

‘This is some kind of quiet genius, and it's getting better. Watch it.’ Guardian Guide

‘At last, a second series of one of the best comedies to appear on mulitchannel. Sean Lock's uncannily well-written tales, are as disturbing as they are devastatingly sharp.’ Daily Telegraph
