Contemporary fashion inspires creative flair at the ICHF Spring Shows 2003

Legendary inspiration and creative flair is the theme this spring. Whether it’s up to the minute tips for a springtime makeover in the home, or the latest products and new ideas for a particular craft, a treasure trove of inspiration awaits craft enthusiasts and beginners alike.

Exotic Milliner & Designer, David Shilling shows a selection of his avant garde work worn by Gertrude Shilling to Royal Ascot.

Centre stage at the show will be a dazzling costume display featuring a selection of the stunning outfits and hats made famous by the late Gertrude Shilling at the Royal Ascot races and designed by her son David every year since he was twelve.  Taken from David Shilling’s own private collection this will be the first time these outfits have been seen together as one display.  From a huge purple and pink bonnet with matching crinoline dress to a patriotic red, white and blue Union Flag in sequins, it is easy to see how the striking and somewhat outrageous outfits worn by Gertrude Shilling to the races earned her the nickname ‘the Ascot Mascot’.

‘I think the most memorable occasion has to be the Ascot we attended on the day that peace was declared in the Falkland Islands; the end of the war was imminent and we had created an outfit in red, white and blue satin with doves of peace. We stayed up overnight to complete it,’ explains David Shilling. ‘The atmosphere was extraordinary and the outfit created a phenomenal amount of interest in the stands and from the National press.’
