Get Down with the Ducklings at WWT Slimbridge
Downy Duckling Days Saturday 29 May to Sunday 6 June

There’s no excuse to be bored this half term when you can duck over to the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) Slimbridge and get down with the ducklings. From Saturday 29 May to Sunday 6 June you can get closer than you ever imagined to these gorgeous little bundles of newly-hatched fluff.

Special tours of the duckery, Slimbridge’s special duck nursery, let you come beak to beak with all manner of divine ducklings, gorgeous goslings, charming cygnets and fantastic baby flamingos. WWT’s team of experts will be on hand to tell you exactly what these fragile little creatures have to do to survive in a duck eat duck world.

Along with the special duckery tours, there’s masses to do in the discovery centre with a whole range of fun craft activities and even special trails around the centre that really will give you a duck’s eye view of Slimbridge.

Neil Woodward, Slimbridge Centre Manager says, ‘Even the hardest hearted person will be charmed by our newly hatched babies, they are always a favourite with our visitors! It really is an experience to get this close to them and find out exactly what our team of aviculturists have to do to give them the best possible start in life.’

Duckery tours and all Slimbridge’s half term activities are free with an entry ticket. Tours run three times daily starting at 11.00am. Places are limited so make sure you book when you arrive.  Visit the web site wwt.org.uk for more information on events at Slimbridge and all nine WWT centres throughout the country.

WWT Slimbridge Goes Voletastic this Summer!
16 July to 2 September

School’s out and with six long weeks to fill, a trip to the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) Slimbridge with the kids is a must. From 16 July to 2 September, Slimbridge is going cute, fluffy and voletastic taking a beady eyed look at one of Britain’s most secretive mammals, the Water Vole.

Immortalised as Ratty in Kenneth Graham’s The Wind in the Willows, the Water Vole has had a rough journey through the end of the 20th century, but thanks to conservation projects across the country the bewhiskered little rodent is gradually making its mark on British wetlands once again.

The Slimbridge Discovery Centre will be celebrating the return of the Water Vole with a whole host of voletastic things to do from guessing the identity of the Wind in the Willows character, to creating your very own water vole habitat at the craft table, badge making and even Water Vole face painting.

A special trail around the grounds will take little ones on a voyage of vole discovery to find out where Ratty likes to hide, what he gets up to and how he survives in his riverbank home.

No trip to Slimbridge would be complete without feeding the geese, ducks and swans.  Feeling one of the rarest birds, a Nene goose, gently nibbling from your fingers or having a huge Mute Swan grab a beak full from your hand are part of the real Slimbridge experience!

If you visit on a Saturday then join the big bird feeds and follow Tina the Warden on her journey around the centre feeding the thousands of hungry beaks clamouring for their lunch. Meet her at the grain desk at 2.45 pm and find out exactly how she keeps all WWT’s feathered residents fed and happy.

With all the activities on offer you’ll be in need of some sustenance, so the Water’s Edge Restaurant will be offering a packed menu to keep even the fussiest eater happy. From snacks and cakes to delicious salads and hot meals every need is catered for.

Slimbridge is open every day from 9.30am to 5.00pm. All the voletastic activities are free with an admission ticket which costs £6.75 for adults and £4.00 for children. A family ticket admitting two adults and two children costs just £17.50. For more information on events at Slimbridge and all nine WWT centres visit the web site www.wwt.org.uk.
