Gliding is an increasingly popular and exciting passtime. Compared with powered flying it is relativeley inexpensive and is both challenging and exhilerating. It is a sport open to all, and nearly all clubs have "trial" lessons where as the name implies you can go along , try a dual flight with a qualified instructor and see if it is for you. It is well worth it for the experience alone. Birmingham has a number of very good gliding clubs and facilities, within easy travelling distance.

Stratford on Avon Gliding club.
Very good club, and an easy drive from south Birmingham or the M40/M42. Winch launch
Bidford Gliding Club. Very nice setting with good facilities, close to the Cotswolds. Aero tow launch.
Shenington Gliding Club. Good web site with lots of useful sections & links, including an extensive list of worldwide glider links and associations.
The Soaring Centre (formerly known as Coventry Gliding Club). 3 miles off the motorways. Large well equipped club. Both winch and aero tow available.
Essex and Suffolk Gliding Club. Not exactly local I know, but this is a very good gliding information site which includes amongst much more, an online market database to buy and sell gliders etc , and a cross country flight planner.
