Local Information
Andalucia and the Costa Del Sol offer such a wide variety of places to go and things to do, that it is no surprise that it is such a popular destination, and one that people return to time after time. There is something for everyone and with a little thought you should be able to find just what appeals to you. There really is just about something for everyone.
Do you want the hectic nightlife
that goes on into the early hours, or do you want a more quiet, tranquil
break away from it all? Do you want a family holiday with plenty to do
for the children, do you want a holiday taking in centuries of varied history
and culture, do you want a beach holiday, or a sightseeing and exploring
holiday? Do you want an activity holiday, perhaps horse riding, watersports,
or golf, even skiing in the winter months? You can do all these and more
in one of the best climates in the world, and all in one area. You certainly
cannot hope to do it all in one holiday. Here is some information and links
on just some of the main places and things to do. You will find many more
yourselves.
Places to Go
Forget the steroetyped image of the Costa Del Sol holiday resort of loud, brash crowds. This possibly does exist in places if you look hard enough to find it, but in reality the Costa Del Sol and Andalucia offers much, much more.
The Costa Del Sol itself has a succession of coastal towns, each with its own particular character and attractions. To the east of Malaga, the main town is Nerja which is considered to be less developed and quieter than the slightly busier stretch west of Malaga. See the coastal map. It is along the coast west of Malaga that the possibly better known towns are situated. From Malaga as you travel west along the coast, you come to Torremolinos and its near neighbour Benalmadena. This is probably the place that people generally think of as the loud brash face of the Costa Del Sol, but this is in many ways misleading as that is only one small side to all it has to offer. Next along the coast is Fuengirola and the stretch of coast known as Mijas Costa. This is rightly popular with young and old and families, as while tourists and the many foreign residents are clearly catered for, it is still very much a working Spanish town, in the modern European and Spanish sense. Further along is the world famous resort of Marbella, and the superb marina at Puerto Banus, where luxurious boats, cars, and properties are the order of the day.Beyond here is San Pedro, the very popular Estapona, various purpose built developements such as Puerto Duquesa and Sotogrande, down to the Rock of Gibraltar, with all its history, spectacular location, and unique status and character. From here it is also an easy trip to North Africa across the Straights of Gibraltar.
Inland Andalucia
Apart from the obvious appeal of the Costa Del Sol, Andalucia is a region steeped in history, culture, and beautiful and spectacular scenery.Apart from Malaga on the coast, it has many other interesting and historic cities such as Granada, Seville, Jerez, and Cordoba, each with many unique features. There are many other smaller but equally important and fascinating towns and villages throughout the region. There are the many famous "white villages" such as Mijas and Casares. There is the spectacular town of Ronda, famous for its bridge over the deep gorge that divides the town, and what is said to be the oldest bullring in Spain. There are the Sierra Nevada mountains above Granada, including the highest peak in mainland Spain, where you can ski in the winter months, and the natural park and wetlands of the Coto Danana where you can see many unique and unusual species of birds and other wildlife including flamingos in their natural habitat.
Things to do
Below are a list of some of the suggested things it is possible to do and links for further information.
The main airport for the region is Malaga, although it is also possible to get flights to other airports including Gibraltar, Seville, and Granada.
The local buses are very modern and inexpensive and operate to and from all the main towns.
Car hire is easily and widely available, as are taxis.
There is a very good local train service using very modern trains that runs between the city of Malaga and Fuengirola which includes a stop at the airport as well as many other convenient stops along its route.Malaga is also incorporated into the national rail network RENFE.
